Arlys Yvonne Schlick passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, January 21, 2014 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the company of her son Steve. She was born on October 7, 1936 in White Earth, North Dakota to Glen and Martha Nordby. In 1937, her family, including older brothers Glen Jr. and Wally, migrated west. They lived in Junction City, Oregon and Farragut, Idaho until settling in Portland, Oregon in 1943.
Following her graduation with honors from Jefferson High School in 1954, Arlys worked for AT&T in the personnel records department. In 1958, she married Frank J. Schlick Jr., who was her husband until his death in 2008. While serving as a devoted housewife and mother of sons David and Steve, she returned to professional employment. Earning a certificate in accounting from Mt. Hood Community College in 1979, Arlys worked as a bookkeeper at a number of Portland businesses until retiring from the Oregon Historical Society in 1998.
After the untimely death of her son David in 2010, Arlys moved to Pittsburgh to be closer to her son Steve and her grandchildren Jasper and Eleanor. Although she suffered a stroke in 2003 which left her memory impaired, Arlys always had a sunny disposition and loved to solve crossword puzzles, play bingo and share stories about times past.
A memorial luncheon for family and friends will be held in Portland on August 16, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mt. Hood Community College Foundation.
