Eleanor Virginia Capps age 95 died on February 26, 2011 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Born November 19, 1915 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to George and Emma Brubach, she graduated from Oliver High School and studied piano under the tutelage of the Chairman of the Music Department at Carnegie Mellon University, later to become an outstanding pianist. On May 24, 1941, she married her high school sweetheart, Harry Russell Capps, a marriage that lasted over fifty-two years until his death in 1993. Eleanor spent most of her married years living in Avalon and North Hills. In 1997, she moved to Greensboro North Carolina to be near her son and daughter-in-law. Eleanor was a devoted wife and mother of two boys. She had little understanding of sports but she never missed a game in which her husband or boys participated. As an accomplished pianist, Eleanor donated her talents to entertain many social groups and civic organizations in the Pittsburgh area. No family gathering was complete without Eleanor playing the piano and accompanying a family sing-a-long.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Harry R. Capps. She is survived by her children: Harry Capps of Grosse Pointe Park, MI and Kenneth Capps and wife Karen of Greensboro, NC. She leaves five grandchildren: Jeremy Capps and wife Lisa, Kristina Hoops and husband Tom, Stacey Meininger and husband Brent, Kevin Capps and wife Kathy and Kylie Capps. Eleanor was also fortunate to know, love and cherish her seven wonderful great grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters who were her closest friends: Shirley Szurszewski and husband Ed of Glenshaw, PA and Helen Kearns of Hudson, OH. There was rarely a day that the three of them did not talk with each other on the telephone.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to the staff of Brighton Gardens of Greensboro, Amedisys Hospice Services and Dr. Richard Tisovec for the care they provided Eleanor during her final weeks of life.
A grave side gathering of family and friends will be held at Allegheny County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Allison Park, PA. at 11am on Saturday March 5, 2011. Arrangements entrusted to Orion C. Pinkerton Funeral Home, Inc., 1014 California Ave, Avalon 412-766-5600. www.pinkertonfuneralhome.net.
