Dave and Family, My deepest sympathies in the loss of your father.  I have fond memories of both he and your mother.  May he rest in peace.

I got to know George when I was at CMU from 1987-1992.  George was a great teacher and friend.  He designed my experimental apparatus and taught me a lot along the way.  I enjoyed going down to the machine shop and listening to his glorious stories including the one about the Zippo lighter being tested in the machine shop.  The Friday happy hours at the Machine Shop brought us all together and George was always a gracious host.  Rest in peace, my friend.

As many others, I worked with George at CMU.  I remembering going to the machine shop for the first time. Down in the sub basement of Doherty Hall. I was 21 years old and this was my first job. I was scared to death going into the basement of that building. I met George and he greeted me with a big Hello and introduced himself. After that -- I knew I was going to like working in MEMS as it was back then.  He was a great guy -- and I will never forget all our Machine Shop Christmas parties!  I actually met my future husband there.  Such great memories of George.  Michele Colon

I will miss my father's brother very much.  He accomplished something that very few do today - he had the same job for 50 years.  I have many memories of he and my father waxing philosophical on issues of the day.  Both were of the camp of, "if you're going to do something, you might as well do it right."  There's much to be said for that.

My condolences to the family. I worked with George at CMU back in the 50's when I was just getting started in the machine trade. He was a good mentor and a great guy. Enjoyed going to lunch with him and the gang.

Three Sons and I will miss him deeply.  we wish only the best of life for Dave and Sandy.

As one of the hundreds of CMU students that experienced the guiding hand of George Biddle, I'm sure I can speak for all of them in stating that our lives have been enriched because he was here on Earth for a while.  As much of an educator as any of the professors, he was also a patient friend to those of us that took the time to get to know him.  George always had a twinkle in his eye when he greeted you with that firm, leathery handshake, sculpted by the countless hours spent making things, or teaching others how to make them.  Conversation during breaks in the lunchroom could encompass any topic, and a wry comment from George would remind us that we hadn't thought a thing through from every angle.  He turned his shop into a magical place during the annual Christmas party, where the cash-strapped grad students could enjoy the palpable warmth and camaraderie along with a few cold drafts, which is how I intend to celebrate George's life -- first chance I get.

Let me first convey my deepest sympathies to the Biddle family.  George was a stalwart at CMU's Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science Machine shop.  During my graduate years at CMU in the late 80's - early 90's, I'd lunch w/him and we'd talk about politics, work, the history of the department, virtually anything that came to our minds. They were entertaining discussions, to say the least.  I can honestly say he was a fantastic mentor to me and I will always remember the help and kindness that he brought to me during my years there.  I will always cherish those times.

George was something else.  It didn't matter if he was wagging his finger about a piker, holding forth on the ruination of something good, or calling me out for not holding to a principle...in all cases he was making a significant impact on a young man who was trying to figure out which way was up.  I regret not being both more frequent and forceful in making my gratitude to him known.  He has been missed since retirement by many; The knowledge he is no longer on this earth makes the void feel larger.  How lucky I was to have received his influence.  I will cling to a number of fond memories that were made in an amazingly small number of years.

I used to play bridge with George in the machine shop just about every weekday during my last couple of years as a grad student.  George was a friend to me and many others in his years in the MSE machine shop.  A truly wonderful person, and a mentor to me, as well as a good card player.  I wish I'd stayed in touch after grad school.

So, I knew George when he ran the machine shop at CMU back in 1985 or so. I had a number of conversations with him which I have thought about time and again over the years. He would tell me about the "old" days of working in machine shops, how different and better things were made in those days, how every worker had their own set of tools which they took pride in. It gave me a lot of perspective through the years. RIP George, thanks for all your help back then.

George ran the metallurgy department's machine shop when I was an undergrad and grad student. A very nice and patient man. Imagine, all these teenagers using your milling machines and lathes. He was the best. He even made our glassblowing pipes. RIP George. You were quite a man.
