Dr. Robert B Challinor MD

July 16, 1923 - March 18, 2024

On March 18th, 2024, Dr. Robert B Challinor died peacefully at his home at the age of 100. He was born on July 16th, 1923 at Shadyside Hospital to Mary Enfield Challinor and Dr. Samuel Boyd Challinor. Known lovingly to friends and family as Bob, he grew up in Beechview, PA with his beloved identical twin brother, the late Samuel Boyd Challinor and older sister, the late Louise Harvey. He was the grandson of Mary F. Fawcett and David Challinor, who was chairman of the Challinor, Taylor and Company, Ltd and a founder of the U. S. Glass Corp.

After completing South Hills High School, he attended Penn State University and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He served his country in WWII, enlisting in the US Army Reserve Corps in 1942 as a Private First Class. He later became a Lieutenant, Junior Grade in the Navy Medical Corps.

Dr. Challinor attended University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, graduating in 1948 and went on to become a Urologic Surgeon at Shadyside Hospital where he later served as their Chairman of Surgery from 1996 through 2010. Additionally, he was the editor of the UPMC Shadyside Medical Journal and the Program Director of Quality Assurance before his retirement in 2010.

In 1955, Robert married his treasured wife, the late Thelma Josephine (TJ) Jones, and they built a home in Fox Chapel where they raised their children and lived for 36 years before moving to Allison Park in 1989. He was a longtime member of the Pittsburgh Field Club where he loved to shoot skeet and play golf, winning many tournaments alongside his son and brother.

He was an avid traveler who loved fine food and wine, golf, fly fishing, hunting and Penn State football. He was always the life of the party and his laughter, humor and zest for life will live on in his family and friends who will miss his dearly.

He is survived by his children, Carole Ann Challinor and Robert Boyd Challinor (Andrea Challinor); his grandchildren Elizabeth Enfield Bennett (Clint Bennett), Spencer Challinor Umstead (Kristyn Spanik), Robert Andrew Challinor, Grant Michael Challinor; his great grandson Brooks Emerson Bennett; his nieces Dr. Sue Challinor, MD (Matthew Teplitz) and Linda Challinor (Ben Zamore); his grandnieces and nephews David Gorlow (Robin Gorlow), Sarah Brown (Justin Brown), William Teplitz and Allegra Zamore; his great grandnephew and niece Leo Brown and Stella Gorlow.

Visitation will be held at H.P. Brandt Funeral Home 1032 Perry Hwy, Pittsburgh, PA 15237 on Friday, March 29, 2024 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm. The Funeral Service will also be held at H.P. Brandt funeral home chapel on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 11:00am with Dr. Drew Harvey officiating. Burial to follow with full Military Honors at Allegheny County Memorial Park located at 1600 Duncan Ave., Allison Park, PA 15101 at 12:00pm.
