Born August 24, 1937, in Pittsburgh, PA, Walter was the eldest son of David and Margaret McRae and brother to David, James, and Peter. He is survived by his daughters, Karen McRae (Atlanta) and Sharon McRae (Pittsburgh), his brother Peter, and several beloved relatives and cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Wilma R. McRae.
Walter graduated from Wilkinsburg High School and Westminster College, where he excelled in sports like track, basketball, and golf, with golf remaining a lifelong passion. He later served in the Army's Special Intelligence Unit, which suggests involvement in important or classified work. However, when asked about his service, he humorously downplayed it by joking that he mostly spent his time playing basketball and drinking beer, showcasing his lighthearted and modest nature.
Walter was a dedicated professional in business and management. He worked for Ford Motor Company for 35 years, rising through the ranks with steady leadership, fairness, and unwavering dedication. His career took the family through 14 moves—each one navigated with his signature practicality and resolve. Upon retirement, he and his wife resided in Palm Coast, FL where his talent on the golf course was honed daily. He was a fixer, a planner, and a provider, and he faced life with calm confidence and keen perception.
His deep faith guided him throughout life. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, serving faithfully as an elder, deacon and treasurer at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Palm Coast, FL. He lived his values with quiet dignity and grace.
Those who knew Walter will remember him as a deeply kind and faithful man who listened intently, spoke wisely, and was always “fantastic” when asked how he was doing. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering integrity.
A private celebration of Walter’s life will be held in Pittsburgh later in the summer. Arrangements are in the trust and care of H.P. Brandt Funeral Home.
In honor of Walter’s memory, donations may be made to The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation at www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org.
