Our daughter Patti went to Spain on an agents trip, she met Art on the trip. He knew I would be worried about her, and took her under his wing. She had the best time...she loved Art, as do all of us. RIP you truly were one of the good guys!

Art Cate was a fabulous mentor and friend as I entered the district in 1979. He always had time to talk with me, offer advice and lend an ear. I will always remember Art Cate as a kind, gentle and humble man who helped me start my professional career as a counselor at El Dorado High School. Rest in peace my friend.  Glen Swedelson

We are saying goodbye to one of our beloved high school principals this week. Arthur B. Cate.
 I did not know him well but he helped me accomplish my goal....to graduate from high school.
 You may not think that's much of a big deal,but in my case it was huge.
 I was "with child" my senior year,married and I wanted so badly to graduate with my class but because of a small ( in so many ways) principal at the time I was not allowed on the school grounds....I guess he thought you could catch pregnant.....which wouldn't have surprised me.
 I was told to take home studies which at the time were provided by U.C. Berkeley and I tried, I really tried but the lessons were more advanced than our little high school ever thought of so I thought I would never see my diploma.
 Enter Mr. Cate....I was very nervous when I went to his office and he put me at ease. Graduate? Yes, sir. Well you can do that. I found I needed three classes to finish and zim balla bim, I was a high school graduate with the class of 1969-two years later, but what the heck!
 So, you see it only takes one person to change another's life forever.
 I will never forget him,his smile, or his non judgemental attitude. 
 I know I'm just a small part of the students whose lives were changed by him.......quite a legacy.

Art was such a great friend to me and countless others. He always provided leadership, but more importantly vision, for educators and students. His personality was magnetic and he knew how to bring people together. Memories of Art will live on in our hearts. Love and prayers to Lida and the family.

There will always be the picture in my mind of a special Christmas at Grandma Cate's with Uncle Art right in the middle of all of us kids playing some mouse board game. Whenever he was there you knew things would be so much fun. Aunt Lida, David, Gail, and families, we are so sorry for the loss of a wonderful man. May we find peace in knowing that he is surrounded today by our loved ones who have gone before him. Can't imagine the trouble those boys could be getting into. They will have Grandma to keep them in line! Love you all.

Art hired me into my first counseling position at EDHS.  Remember the little house that was the district office?  And a famous trip to France for a wedding--always interesting and adventurous times.  Cate Family, know that you are loved and supported by an international community of friends.

    More than 47 years ago this man changed lives, an entire high school and a town. We remember where we came from: I posted this to Facebook and within a few minutes got these replies. This is how much this man was loved and respected by kids whose lives he changed and a grateful community:                                                                                                      
Getting word that former Williams High administrator Art B. Cate has died. Cate was hired at Williams High School in 1967 to try and straighten out a high school plagued by scandal, chaos and literally no discipline. He did just that. Under his leadership Williams became both an academic and athletic powerhouse. He left Williams to move to Placerville in the middle 70s to become administrator of El Dorado High School in Placerville. He retired in Placerville but had remained active. He remained in contact with many of his former students from Williams. I spoke to him in December and he and Lida were enjoying their grandchildren.

Steve Danley: He not only turned WHS around, he turned lives around. Fond memories. 

Doug Turner: This saddens me deeply. Back in the day I wasn't exactly a model student but I respected this man more than any single educator I encountered growing up. He was firm but fair and there was never a doubt he cared for us all.Last saw him at a class reunion close to 20 years ago. He took a school that was an embarrassment and put back a pride that we all carry with us to this day.

Steve Danley: Yes Doug. He was respected, and respected others as well. I believe, that is why he was so well liked.

Kevin O'Sullivan: He did straighten out Williams h.s and myself. He was compassionate and affective. I believe he was largely responsible for the years I so much value. I think there are a lot of people look back at that time in their life and greatly appreciate his contribution.

I remember fun times with Art and Lida when we were young kids and they were just starting out in their careers.  I would love to visit them and go to their schools where they taught.  Little did I know, I'd follow in their footsteps.  Thank you Uncle Art for the wonderful memories.  Love you Aunt Lida.  Linda Kinnard
