Here is the last letter I wrote to my Dad:

Dad,

I just wanted to tell you how much I admire and love you.  You have fought as hard as you can, against all odds and I know you have done so for your family because you love us all so much. When the time comes for you to leave this earth, I just want you to be at peace.  I want you to know that I will miss you each and every day, but I will be OK.  I am determined to live a good and productive life that would make you proud.  The best parts of me I got from you.  I am so grateful that you are my dad, and I would give anything to make you better.  You more than anyone I know deserves to be healthy and pain free.  You are without a doubt the greatest man I have ever known.

I love you Dad, more than you will ever know.

Don and I worked together as patrol deputies back in the late sixties and early seventies. We had a lot of fun, caught a few bad guys and found a lot of pull-tabs on the Sonoma coast with his metal detector.

Don's the only guy I ever knew whose Army tour-of-duty was in Middletown, CA. He's also the only guy I knew to wear a set of custom Herrett stocks on his 6" S&W Highway Patrolman .357.

Don was a great guy. He will be missed.

I can barely believe I'll not be hearing "Hi and HOWAREYA, you're LOOKING good" on the phone anymore.  But I have 41 years of great memories of my buddy and "big brother" to keep me warm.  

Donnie was the most special guy, and we are all so fortunate to have shared his life.

Rest happy, Big Brother, and don't terrorize the other angels with your pranks!

Well Hon., it has been a fantastic ride. Thank you for a wonderful life, millions of laugh, and a few tears along this incredible journey we called marriage. When I married my best friend I knew it was for life. I would not change a thing except wishing we had married sooner.

I am sure the Angels in Heaven are laughing at your humor. Heaven is lucky to have you and we will miss you.

Even though I was very young, I have nice memories of my Uncle Don in Michigan.  He was always cheerful, that I remember!  Praying for you, Deb, Jeff, and Sarah.  Uncle Bob, you are also in my prayers-I know you will miss your brother.

It's been years since Don & I both worked at SCSO.  I'm sorry our paths haven't crossed since.  Debbie you have my condolences.  Good Luck

Don was the best neighbor ever.  He was friendly, helpful and funny.  When it snowed Don, who was already retired, would get up early in the morning and shovel the road for those of us who were still working.  And he did it cheerfully.  He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone who came by.  Even when times were difficult in the last three years, I enjoyed going over and talking to Don.  He nevery complained and always had a positive attitude.  I will miss him.

Pollock Pines

I remember the childhood years in Scotts,MI playing on the farm.  One time we surprised Don's Mom with a nice big rat we had found in the barn.  Needless to say, she shooed us out of the house in a hurry.  Don was a good friend to grow up with back in MI.

I had the privilege of working with Don when I was 19 years old.  He was a Detective at the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office at that time.  I was a Cadet assigned to that unit. He helped me learn about being a Deputy Sheriff.  He also helped me get hired as a Deputy Sheriff.  
But the most important gift he gave me was he showed me (by example) what it means to be a man.  He showed me that a true man has courage, integrity,  honesty, loyalty, kindness, humility, strength and a great sense of humor. He showed me these qualities in 1973 and he was still showing me them on Sept.15 2011 when I last visited.  I am very gratful for that last visit with he and Deb.

Although a long time ago, I still remember working with Uncle Don around the farm.  I don't know how much "work" I was doing at the time but I thought I was helping and always remember I liked being around Uncle Don.  My thoughts and prayers are with you Deb, Jeff and Sarah.

I worked with Don & Deb in the courts, they always looked in on our office each morning & during the day to make sure we were alright, as our office was a hole in the back of the building.  When Deb retired, Don continued to watch over us.  He was always so funny  and was always showing up so quiet like and scaring me.  I was just waiting to pull a trick on him for doing that and it was after Halloween one year and the grandkids had an awful mask that was so scary, ugly and evil looking and I knew just the trick to play on him.  I was in the washroom when he came in and I waited til I thought he was sitting in the chair by my desk and walked through the door with the mask on and he actually jumped up and put his hand near his hip by his gun and it really scared him.  The look on his face was priceless and so funny and I, of course laughed  and laughed  and could hardly stop.  We always laughed about that for years.  He was one of the nicest friends we ever had and even though we hadn't seen him for years we will miss him.  Bill and I  both prayed for him every day.  Deb, we will always remember him and you. I followed Don around the family farm like a little shadow when I came to visit from Florida.  He was my favorite cousin, but I'm sure I was a bit of an irritant to him! He really messed with my mind one summer when I was 8 or 9 and he was12 or 13.  He hid rubber fishing worms at various places and when we went to feed the calves, he'd pull one out of the straw and dangle it in his mouth.  I was so gullible I ran to the house saying, "Mom, grandma! Donnie's eating worms!" What fond, but often vexing memories I have with Donnie and my other cousins on the farm! You're in a better place, dear cousin, and we will see you again!
