Hugh D. Thompson better known as Rocky. Played 27 years (611 tournaments) on the P.G.A tour waiting for that first victory to utter the phrase “I AM THE MAN!” To all of us that loved and knew him, he was always “THE MAN.”
Best friend and husband to Elizabeth, dad to Roxanne and Delana, daddy to Elvis and Bear, loving brother to Willie Edgar II (Billy), brother-in-law to Markita Sue Jones, Mary Ellen and Kevin, beloved uncle to Mindy, Trisha, Tom ad Thomas and half-brother to Trudy.
Born in Shreveport, LA in 1939 the family moved to Wichita Falls, TX. At a young age Hugh changed his name to Rocky after his favorite cowboy actor Allan Rocky Lane.
He graduated from the Wichita Falls High School and then from The University of Houston after playing on Coach Dave Williams golf team
Like Bryson DeChambeau, Rocky was a maverick in the game. He was the first pro golfer on the tour to use Karsten Solheims new Ping putter and Ping irons. He was a co-developer of the “Killer Bee” golf clubs. A 52 inch driver started out in his bag and a 56 inch at the end when the USGA enforced the “Rocky Rule” (as fellow pros called it) making 48 inches the limit. Then there was the Low Rider putter fans would stop and gasp, some laughed when he used it. The laughs stopped quickly when the putts kept on dropping.
A man who said he never worked a day in his life spent 44 years on the "big" and senior tours trying to find the secret for the perfect swing.
After a long battle with Alzheimer's, on a warm march Saturday in Plano, TX, "THE MAN" is now resting peacefully , without the pain and confusion waiting for the day when we will join him on the 19th hole.
