Janet Spivey Bemenderfer, 70, went to see her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, suddenly in the privacy of her home in Plano, TX on Wednesday morning, June 11, 2025. Losing her battle to a diagnosis best described as periodic paralysis, Janet endured much pain in pursuit of the joy she found in family and in her work.
Born May 1, 1955, in Lufkin, TX to the late Dr. Dan Spivey and his wife Josephine, Janet had a traditional East Texas upbringing with her two older brothers, David Spivey and Dr. Mark Spivey, alongside many of her uncles, aunts, and cousins. She graduated from Lufkin High School in 1973; an excellent student, Janet thrived in her involvement in various youth groups such as the Christian Youth Fellowship, the student council, and performing as a Sergeant in the high school drill team. Graduating from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1976, she completed a bachelors of Business Administration in three years while studying year round – a dedication and intellect that she personified in her entire career and personal life. After college, she went to work in various fields starting at a Houston-based financial firm, then for Temple-Inland in Diboll, and finally East Texas Canning Company in Nacogdoches where she met her future husband on a blind date.
On St. Patty’s Day, March 17, 1979, Janet Spivey married Frederick E. Bemenderfer (Fred) in the First Christian Church of Lufkin. As the luckiest man alive, Fred would enjoy a fruitful and blessed marriage alongside his first and only wife of 46 years, Janet. Moving to Plano, TX in July of 1983, Fred and Janet found the city they would serve and raise a family in. There, Janet found a love for distribution and logistics while helping to manage various distribution centers before the birth of her firstborn son, Daniel Bemenderfer in 1987, and followed by two twin sons, John Bemenderfer and Alan Bemenderfer, in 1989. Janet was a boy mom and she loved every minute of it, most of the time.
In 2005, after a time as a stay at home mom to raise the boys, Janet joined the family business as the Business Manager of Roome Land Surveying, Inc. Janet served exceptionally in this role for two decades. She guided the business in its pursuit to provide land surveys to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Her leadership saw the company through the 2008 housing crisis; where most surveying firms failed – Roome persisted through the recession. Her business acumen was only exceeded by the love and care she had for every employee. A grace and strength that she applied in her life and business, one she learned through faith by God’s grace in Jesus Christ. She was an employee advocate, and most enjoyed the talks she’d have throughout the day with co-workers.
A dedicated wife and mother, Janet found time for lifelong hobbies, trips, and family reunions. She loved to fish and travel. Janet was a master at finding a school of perch or outdoing her relatives with the biggest fish of the trip. She enjoyed the quiet time in nature and all the friendly conversation with friends and family. She made it a point to go on vacation once a year, enjoying trips with family to Jackson, WY, Yellowstone National Park, Banff and Calgary, Canada, Destin, FL, all the Disney and Universal Studios and so much more. Yet there was one event she looked forward to the most every year – the family reunion at Pine Island Hunting and Fishing Club, where she could fish and catch up with her many uncles and aunts, mom and dad, brothers, cousins, nephews and nieces, sons, and grandchildren (her pride and joy). She loved you all, very much, and if she could have just a few last words they would be, “Y’all have fun!”
Janet is survived by her loving husband, Fred Bemenderfer; her children, Daniel Bemenderfer and his fiancée Stacy Fendley, John and Emily Bemenderfer, and Alan and Melissa Bemenderfer; and her grandchildren, Lucas, Lauryn, Evelyn, and Henry Bemenderfer. She also leaves behind her siblings, Dr. Mark Spivey and family, David Spivey and family, as well as countless extended family members and friends.
Her memorial service will be held at Ted Dickey Funeral Home in Plano, Texas on June 28th at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choosing.
