Kurt was born July 28, 1958 at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas to Laura Ruth (nee Sanders) and Thomas Gilbert Hendrix. As an Air Force family, Kurt and his parents lived in Wichita Falls, San Antonio, Germany, and Virginia before settling in San Antonio. He had many fond memories of trips that the family made throughout Europe when they were stationed in Germany.
Kurt graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in San Antonio then received his Associate’s Degree from San Antonio College followed by his Bachelor’s Degree from Trinity University.
While at Trinity University, Kurt met his future wife, Tami (nee Urban) and they were married September 8, 1984. Their union was blessed with their three children, Thomas, Jessica, and Jonathan. Kurt was a devoted husband and father who loved his wife and children dearly. He was actively involved in his children’s various activities over the years – YMCA Princesses, attending various sporting events, and he really enjoyed helping to build pinewood derby cars. As they grew older, the projects grew more complex including multiple upholstered headboards that Jessica designed and he helped to build.
Kurt was forever calm and collected despite what happened along his life’s journey whether it was a job loss or cancer diagnosis. He had a quirky sense of humor – while recovering from colon cancer treatments in the late 1990’s he declared the treatment an efficient weight loss program but one that he didn’t recommend.
Kurt enjoyed his career as a Premium Auditor in the insurance industry beginning at Aetna Life & Casualty and he later transitioned to what would ultimately become Liberty Mutual Insurance. He jumped on the opportunity to retire early when it arose several years ago. In his retirement he enjoyed yard work, repairing things, various projects, helping neighbors, meeting friends for lunch or a beer, and even seemed to enjoy the barrage of “old man” jokes from his children.
He was steadfast in his Christian faith which carried him through life’s many ups and downs. Retirement gave him the opportunity to delve deeper into the Bible and his faith. He became notorious in the Messengers Sunday School class for diverting the class down a “rabbit hole” with some obscure but pertinent facts he had discovered.
Kurt is survived by his loving wife Tami, son Thomas Urban Hendrix (wife Mediha Askut), daughter Jessica Lynn Hendrix, son Jonathan Erik Hendrix, and his mother Laura Ruth Hendrix. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas Gilbert Hendrix.
A celebration of Kurt’s life will take place on Saturday August 26th at 2:00pm at First Christian Church 813 E. 15th Street, Plano, Texas
