

At the age of 21, Mavis left England and moved to Canada. While single, she lived in Canada, Long Beach, CA, Los Angeles, Ca, and Houston, Tx. In Houston, Mavis worked for Highland Oil. Houston is also where Mavis met the love of her life, Joe McGowan and they were married on June 30,1962.
Throughout the years, Mavis and joe lived in Houston, Tx ( where daughter Sharon was born), Dallas, Tx, Washington D.C, Spring, TX and Chicago, IL (where daughter Heather was born), and finally settled in Plano, TX in 1976. Mavis had a love for her home country of England and enjoyed taking her family to visit and show them around where she grew up as a young girl and teenager. Mavis also had a great love for America, so much that she became a United States citizen in 1979! She also loved Texas. One of her favorite sayings was "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!"
Mavis was a long time member of First United Methodist Church Plano where she was active in Sunday school, United Methodist Women, Circle Group, and many other areas of the church. She was well known for helping with the Christmas Bazaars and making her homemade cranberry chutney. Mavis dearly loved God and her family. She loved cooking, gardening, crossword puzzles, and volunteering at her children's schools. She was an avid watcher of golf, tennis, and her beloved Dallas Cowboys! Mavis loved her grandchildren and spending time with them.
Mavis was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe, of 44 years and her brother Peter King. She is survived by daughter Sharon and son-in-law Jeff Stark of Topeka, Ks, daughter Heather and son-in-law, Nick Briggs, of Frisco, Tx., grandchildren Keely, Brandt, Nicholas, Jace, and great grandson Treston, and cousin Jean Shorrock of Manchester, England. The memorial service will be lived streamed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Plano.
