Tempie "Joy" Overby

Tempie “Joy” Overby, 88, of Plano, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. She was born on January 21, 1935, in Austin Texas, to the late Claude and Grace (Miller) Wilson. Joy spent her childhood in Austin, El Paso, and eventually in Wichita Falls. She was married in 1952 and graduated high school in 1953 from Wichita Falls High School.

Joy spent many years as a homemaker while her kids were young before joining Lonestar Life Insurance Company in 1971. She started as a part-time clerk and with hard work and dedication, she worked her way up to Vice President and Corporate Officer over the course of 28 years with the company. In addition to her full-time career, Joy also worked at Mark Opinion Research in the evenings for many years. Following her time at Lonestar, Joy worked part-time for Military Model Distribution well into her late 70s.

More than anything, Joy loved being a mom. She went to great measures to make sure her children had everything they could ever want or need and considered it a blessing to provide for them. Her devotion to her children was strong and steadfast, much like her heart-of-gold character. Joy lived an honorable life as she was one to always see the good in others, find joy in each day, lived in truth and walked by faith. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Plano for nearly 40 years. Joy was a loyal friend and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Over the years she enjoyed bowling, square dancing, traveling, and playing Bridge. She loved cooking for others and relaxing at her West Plano home that she worked so hard to acquire. She carried herself through life with such grace and poise and leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and joy – as she truly lived up to her name. Joy will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.

In addition to her parents, Joy was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Harmon. She is survived by her three children, Cindy Overby of Mabank, Texas, Ramona (Doug) Kimler of Plano, Texas, and Steven (Angela) Overby of Frisco, Texas; four grandchildren, Chance Overby of San Jose, California, Olivia Overby of Dallas, Texas; Anna Overby of Carrollton, Texas; and Jonathan (Stephanie) Massegee of The Colony, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Noah Anderson and Ruth Massegee.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Plano, 3665 W. President George Bush Turnpike, Plano, Texas 75075.
