

Verlana Ava Bray was born on December 19, 1948, in Burbank, California, to Vermont and Grace Galloway. She passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by kindness, service, and quiet strength.
Verlana grew up in Los Angeles, California, where she was baptized as a child and attended Arlington Memorial Church—an early foundation that shaped her values and gentle spirit throughout her life. She later lived in Oklahoma City before making her home in Plano, Texas.
Prior to pursuing higher education, Verlanna was a trailblazer, becoming the first Black flight attendant for Trans World Airlines (TWA), breaking barriers with grace and determination at a time when such opportunities were rare. She later attended Los Angeles Trade–Technical College and Oklahoma State University, continuing her lifelong commitment to growth, service, and excellence.
A devoted nurse at Kaiser Permanente Hospital and with the Los Angeles Unified School District, Verlana dedicated her professional life to caring for others. Her work reflected her natural compassion, patience, and commitment to service—qualities that extended well beyond her career and into every relationship she held.
She was a loving mother to her children, Kimberly and John (affectionately known as “John-John”). Verlana was preceded in death by her parents, Vermont and Grace Galloway; her sister, Greer Galloway; and her beloved daughter, Kimberly Johnson.
She leaves behind her son, John Johnson; her nephew, Lester Fennell; and a host of grandchildren who brought her immense joy and pride.
Verlana was known as a genuinely sweet person who found happiness in life’s simple pleasures—cooking and sewing for those she loved, watching sports, and spending time at the beach. She especially treasured sunsets by the ocean, moments that brought her peace and reflection.
Her warmth, gentleness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her.
