At 97, Paul set off to reunite with his beloved wife, Vesta M. Gatta, along with the family and friends who’ve gone before him. For those of us who remain, this isn’t a goodbye—it’s a celebration of a truly remarkable life.
Paul was born on June 14, 1928, in West Tampa to Paul Gatta and Josephine Busciglio Gatta. The proud son of Italian and English heritage, he grew up in a lively neighborhood where Spanish, Italian, and English flowed together like music. He carried those languages—and that love of culture—with him throughout his life.
His early days were filled with curiosity, adventure, and a love of working with his hands. In school, woodworking captured his imagination, setting him on the path that would shape his career and give him a lifelong creative spark.
After graduation, Paul proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard, stationed in Greenland. Service was something he never took lightly, and it left an indelible mark on the man he became. When he returned home, he followed his love of learning to the University of Tampa, where he studied Industrial Art, and later to Florida Southern College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. His fascination with the world around him eventually led him back to school later in life, where he earned another degree in Geology from the University of South Florida—because for Paul, it was never too late to learn something new.
He loved simple joys: the sound of waves at the beach, the thrill of finding an interesting rock or rare stamp, quiet hours tinkering in his workshop, and moments surrounded by family. Travel and exploration called to him, and he answered whenever he could.
Paul’s talent for design and craftsmanship led him to start Paul Gatta Construction, where he built homes, businesses, and a reputation for hard work and integrity. His handiwork can still be seen throughout Tampa—a lasting reminder of the life he built with both his hands and his heart. Even after a stroke at 75 left him paralyzed, his spirit remained unshaken. For more than 22 years, he faced each day with resilience, humor, and an unyielding love for music and laughter.
Paul was married to the love of his life, Vesta, for 54 wonderful years. Their love was steady and deep—a partnership built on laughter, family, and shared adventures. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest joy came from watching his family grow.
He is survived by his children, Kelley L. Gatta, Michele Lintner, Paul David Gatta, and Frank A. Gatta (Jean Gatta); twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Paul never lost his sense of humor. He loved making people smile—especially the many nurses and caregivers who cared for him through the years, and most of all Michele, who lovingly stood by his side for almost 14 years. He had a way of turning even the most ordinary moment into something warm and memorable.
In honor of Paul’s lifelong belief in opportunity, learning, and community, the family asks that donations be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Tampa in lieu of flowers.
Paul’s story is one of love, resilience, curiosity, and laughter.
