
1914 - 2013
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Stevens on June 6, 2013, at the age of 98. He died peacefully at the Ste. Anne's Veterans Hospital, in Ste. Anne-de- Bellevue, Quebec. He will be greatly missed by his wife Renée, his children Erica, Angela, Noah, and Jonathan, their spouses, as well as his grandchildren Diego, Haden, Elijah, Paley and Maggie. He was a devoted husband, and a caring father. Fred Stevens was a chemist, inventor, and decorated war veteran. He was an expert in research management and finally a magazine editor. Also, he was a photographer, an amateur artist, and an avid cyclist and skier. He held a number of patents, most notably for a garbage disposal. He was knowledgeable and well-read in a broad range of fields. He was an extremely intelligent man, and loved discussion. He was devoted to his family and his work. The son of Frederick Moses Stevens and Edith Hazelwood Bridges, he was born in Montreal in 1914. He graduated from Westmount High School in 1930, winning the City of Montreal Classics prize. He graduated from McGill University in 1934 with a Bachelor's degree in chemistry. He worked for Fraser Papers in Edmundston, New Brunswick for 4 years. He served his country in the Second World War as a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for valour. After the war, he went to Los Angeles, California, where he met Renée Paley, and obtained a Master's degree in Philosophy of Science at UCLA. They married and settled down in Montreal in 1951, where he went to work for the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada. After a number of years as a consultant, he joined the magazine Pulp and Paper Canada. He was editor-in-chief until his retirement over a decade later. He lived a long and productive life. He was an inspiration to those who knew him. He was a model citizen, and an exemplary Canadian. We wish to thank the wonderful nursing and support staff who accompanied him through his final years with professional service and loving care. Visitation will be held at the Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home, 222 Boulevard 2-20, Pointe-Claire (514) 483-1870, on Monday, June 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. Service will be at 2:30. A reception will follow after 4:00 p.m.
