I'm so sad that I'm just finding out now. I had the pleasure of providing wound care for Alex for several years. He was so knowledgeable about so many things, and he was such an interesting person, from his coin collecting, to his knowledge of history, horses, psychology, and other subjects. Many times I stayed after I finished wound care, to have a soda and chat with him. He always kept Diet Coke for me in his fridge, and was just such a gentleman, so thoughtful and gracious, never complaining about his situation. I tried sometimes to get in touch with him but his phone was disconnected. I truly miss him and think of him often. My condolences to his family.

Al Lomtev was my coach, mentor, and friend. As a coach he went above and beyond normal coaching activities. He would, without compensation, take us to meets hours away, on the weekends, get us to summer gymnastics camps in the Poconos, and invite us to stay in Wildwood for a week to train on his friend’s trampolines. During my senior year, my father was terminally ill, Al took the reins and filled in for the void in my life. As Larry Besterman stated, Al set us up to succeed in life. Al took Larry and I (in that little yellow Opel) to meet the gymnastics coaches at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He would also attend Army Gymnastics meets and our graduations. After military service, I found myself trying to emulate my mentor as a high school teacher and a gymnastics coach for 25 years. In 2005, I had the honor of letting my wife and daughters meet this very important person in my life. Since then, we would call each other from time to time just to check in. My gymnastics teammates and Friends for Life, Larry, Paul Elliot, Ronnie Miscavige were group texting when we got word of Al’s passing. We will all miss him.

I'm so sorry to hear about Al's passing!  He was such a nice guy! I met him through my brother when I was in college and we became good friends!  RIP Al!

Alex was well respected by his students and staff. His positive attitude had a great influence on those students he taught and coached. Privileged to have worked with him in the Boro.

In 1969, Mr Lomtev was my Gymnastics coach at Levitt JHS in Willingboro, NJ.  At the end of that year, we were informed that JFK HS would not be able to field a Gymnastics team.  After asking for his advice, Mr Lomtev redirected me to the Track team and, specifically, Pole Vaulting -- which has a little bit of gymnastics incorporated.  That well-considered bit of advice and encouragement made a huge difference in my life.  I went on to eventually set the HS pole vaulting record, and was subsequently recruited by the U.S. Naval Academy.  I graduated in 1978 and served for 25 years as a Navy pilot.  I'm sure that Mr Lomtev affected the courses of many students; but, for me, HE changed everything.  I am forever grateful.  With greatest respect and admiration . . . Mr. Lomtev was a wonderful teacher. I have nothing but fond memories of him during my days as his student at Levitt, JHS. My deepest condolences.

Sorry to hear of Alex's passing.  I knew him at Temple U.  He was a very good guy.  Sorry for your loss.
