Barbara Steinhardt, born Barbara Grivel, passed peacefully with her family at her side on November 1, 2017. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she grew up in Lynbrook, New York, and graduated from Oneonta State Teachers’ College, now SUNY Oneonta. During college she met her beloved husband Fred, and they were married on Easter Sunday, March 25, 1951; they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this past March. Barbara and Fred were parents to John (wife Mary) and Claudia (husband Eric). They were blessed with two granddaughters, Megan (husband Nathan) and Linda, and a grandson, Ian (wife Melody). In 2015 they welcomed great-grandson Eli Zacharias.
A gifted kindergarten and first grade teacher, Barbara paused her teaching career for ten years to devote herself to her family. Among Barbara’s interests were volunteering at Bonnet House for more than 18 years. She and Fred were world travelers, visiting London every year for more than 30 years, and touring places including China, Japan, all 50 states, the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, the Virgin Islands, and most European countries. She was an excellent cook, and a wonderful mother and wife. She was loved by all, and everyone appreciated her generous, encouraging spirit.
