Howard Eric Kahn

I am infinitely saddened by the loss of my very close friend. There are not many pleasures one can share at his and my age but we managed good mental conversation and cheerful companionship. 
I will always remember and cherish the time we spent together.

Well Ms Claudia,  you're definitely continuing in your dads footsteps. I've seen all the qualities you consider 'his' legacy, patience,  kindness and generosity,  in 'you', and with brains also! It was a pleasure caring for your dad, and thanks for sharing his story with me. May God's face continue to shine through yours.

Fred Steinhardt was a volunteer at Bonnet House for over 20 years. 
The first time I met Fred & his wife Barbara was at a concert they had just become members and said they wanted to volunteer that was a Thursday night they were here volunteering on Saturday.  When he was 91 he decided he needed to retire - he still came to the concerts and kept up with me through email.  Fred was a truly wonderful person.  Everyone loved him and Saturdays just are not the same without him.  

Fred was a reader, big time!!  In between his nature tram tours at the Bonnet House, he always had a book in his hands. We would have frequent conversations about what we were reading.  I valued his perspective. I didn't know him well, but he was one of my favorite people. 

Fred and his wife, Barbara,  moved into our Voyager Condo community many years ago - and were always known as the "fit" couple who walked miles together each day. Always smiling with a positive outlook on life.   Fred in his later years was visible down at our pool swimming laps ...slow and steady... for just about an hour each day.  His sharp mind and kind soul made Fred a person that our family came to love.  A dear man whom we will all miss a great deal. .  

So much more to say than what was in the obituary!
My father and I never exchanged a cross word. Never!
Dad was a U. S. Army combat veteran, and, agreeable as always, he even loved Army food. 
He read The NY Times every day… and then talked about what he read for the rest of the day. 
He loved good food. And I loved to cook for him— always an appreciative audience!
If he passed a homeless person he would ask if they were hungry. When they inevitably said they were, he’d buy them a sandwich and coffee and bring it to them. 
He was the most self-disciplined person I’ve ever known. He decided to quit smoking one day— and did. He exercised daily and had one (and only one) alcoholic beverage a day. 
He was very private and unemotional. I always thought he had a lot in common with Mr Spock on Star Trek. As a child I’d play a game, “try to make Dad smile.”
He didn’t tell me he loved me until I was in my fifties, but I always knew he did. He was president (and sole member) of my fan club. He thought I’d be the first woman President. He told me I was “bossy,” but to me that meant I’d be a good boss!
When I turned 60 he said he was still waiting for me to rebel! I never wanted anything as much as I wanted him to be proud of me. 
I am blessed to have had a father like him. He was my rock. His legacy of patience, kindness, and generosity will inspire me forever.
