

Jean H. Sutherland, born in Johnstown, PA on 6/14/1919, peacefully passed away in her home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on 12/11/2012. She was raised in Altoona, PA and met her husband Edward P. Sutherland at Penn State University. They married on 12/26/1941 and eventually moved to Monmouth County, NJ, where Jean completed her education and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Monmouth College. She had a long career in teaching, first, at Oakhurst Country Day School for five years and then, in Ocean Township Schools for the next 25 years. She taught students from grade levels pre-k through fifth grade. She served on the Township of Ocean Teachers Association for 8 years and was president for two of those years. She served on the PTA Board of Ocean Township for 15 years (as teacher representative). She served as master teacher for student teachers from vairous colleges. She loved to work with children and enjoyed their progress. She loved her many friendships and her family members throughout her life. She loved to play bridge, to travel, go to live theater and she especially loved to go to the ocean shore. Jean is survived by her only son Glen E. Sutherland MD, her daughter-in-law Susan A. Sutherland, her two granddaughters Kristen S. Rossheim and Lauren L. Thoms and her great-grandson Jack B. Rossheim. Her husband has been deceased since 6/2000. Funeral services will be held on Friday 12/14/12 at 2pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home-North on 200 West Copans Road in Pompano Beach. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Heartland Hospice, 150 South Pine Island, Suite 200, Plantation, Fl 33324.
