Today, we gather to honor the remarkable life of Miguel Angel Suarez—a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and mentor whose profound influence has shaped us all in countless ways. Born on August 29th, 1935, in Padilla, Corozal, Puerto Rico, Miguel, affectionately known as Piro and Ito, was a man whose life radiated warmth, love, and strength.
Raised on a humble farm in Puerto Rico amidst a bustling household filled predominantly with brothers, Miguel learned early the values that would guide his entire life—respect for family, compassion for all living things, and steadfast integrity. His childhood was marked by resilience: overcoming juvenile paralysis that affected his speech and left lasting nerve damage in his leg. But rather than succumbing to adversity, Miguel embraced life fiercely and joyously, embodying the spirit of joie de vivre that became his hallmark.
Miguel’s journey brought him from the rural hills of Puerto Rico to the bustling streets of The Bronx, NY, where he built his life and raised his cherished family alongside his adored wife, Guillermina Martinez, whom he married in the late 1950s. Their union was a testament to deep devotion, marked by shared joys and painful losses, including the early passing of several of their children. Yet, through every challenge, Miguel remained unwaveringly committed to providing for his family and securing their happiness and safety.
He was a hardworking man whose career spanned various roles—from taxi driver to building superintendent, finally spending decades with the MTA as a motorman until his retirement. Miguel and Guillermina eventually settled first in Puerto Rico and later in Pompano Beach, Florida, always seeking a space filled with warmth, laughter, and family.
Miguel was a man of vibrant contrasts—a profound contradiction who was simultaneously simple yet complex, generous yet frugal, and rigid yet adaptable. Though he jokingly claimed poverty, he was immeasurably wealthy in spirit, generosity, and principles. His kindness was unparalleled, extending effortlessly to family, friends, strangers, children, and animals alike.
As Chris, his son-in-law, fondly recalls, Miguel was known affectionately as Ito, Piro, and occasionally, lovingly, “dad.” Chris reminisces about their first meeting nearly 20 years ago, where Miguel humorously labeled him a “dope,” a term that quickly became synonymous with Miguel’s warm brand of sarcasm and affection. Their relationship deepened profoundly over the years, transforming from one of familial ties into genuine friendship and mentorship.
Miguel’s later years were quieter yet rich with simple pleasures—enjoying his favorite recliner, sipping Bacardi rum or a cold Heineken, and delighting in beloved TV programs like Caso Cerrado, Dose Corazones, classic WWII movies, The Three Stooges, and Laurel and Hardy. Even in these quieter moments, Miguel’s presence filled the room, his humor sharp, his commentary incisive, and his laughter infectious.
Above all, Miguel’s legacy resides in the hearts of his children—Michael, David, Carmen, and Margie—his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom were his life’s greatest pride. They were the center of his universe, the driving force behind every sacrifice, every hard day’s work, every moment of joy and sorrow. Miguel’s deep love for his family defined him. In return, they adored him beyond measure, cherishing his wisdom, humor, and boundless compassion.
Miguel Angel Suarez was a man who truly understood life—not merely existing but living each day passionately, compassionately, and authentically. He taught us by example to honor our values, to find humor in life’s absurdities, to show compassion even in adversity, and above all, to treasure family and friendship.
As we say goodbye today, we know that Miguel’s spirit and memory will forever live within each of us. His strength, his laughter, his love, and his profound wisdom are now woven into the fabric of our lives. He has left an indelible mark that will guide and inspire generations to come. He is reunited now with Guillermina, the love of his life, yet he remains forever here, a cherished presence in our hearts.
Rest well, dear Miguel, beloved Ito, our Piro—our father, grandfather, mentor, and friend. You have enriched our lives immeasurably. You are deeply missed and forever loved.
