Mechtly, Ramona 85 of Pompano Beach, FL passed away peacefully at her home after a six month battle with breast cancer. She was most proud of her many grandchildren; Michael (April) Mechtly, Clari Mechtly, Jenny Mechtly, Katie (Johnnie) Bryson, Sarah Mechtly, Lauren Mechtly, Dustyn, Camryn, Brendan, Avery & Lindsey Fulton. Also Rebekah, Jacob & Naomi Blair. Great grandmother to Alexiel, Abby & Arwen.
Born in Clarksburg, WV during the depression to Ahva & Beulah Sandy. They moved to PA when she was a young girl. It was during her adolescence that she realized her artistic talents & later attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Mom was a great artist and could draw or paint anything. In 1956 she married Bob & a few short years later had their first child Jim. Jim kept getting sick & just couldn’t take the cold weather so on the advice of their doctor they moved to a warmer climate, FL. There she was a homemaker later raising three more children. She was the best mom a child could ask for! Single handedly tended to our home, cooking us home cooked meals while attending every class field trip along with being “room mom” or participating in scouts, she did it all! She would save her pennies throughout the year to make sure we had things to open up on Christmas. If she needed something done she would take a class to learn how to do it & then get it done. Mom took pride in her home & had the world’s greatest “green thumb”. There was never a plant she could not grow, most started from seeds including her prized tomato plants. Well known for her Harvey Wallbanger Cake, she even won an award for it! It wasn’t until 1980 that she went back to work outside of the home. It was then that she started her career with Burdines first in the Kids dept. and later as a certified bra specialist in the lingerie dept. She retired from Burdines/Macy’s in 2006 after 25 years of employment. In her “retirement years” she kept herself quite busy. She would rarely miss a BINGO at Chick-fil-a or one of the many activities at the Senior Center in Lauderdale by the Sea. It took a cancer diagnosis to slow her down. Even after cancer made her tired & weary she would always have that beautiful smile on her face. She was loved by many and will be forever missed!
In Lieu of flowers please consider a donation in her name to either Lighthouse Christian School 2331 NE 26 Ave., Pompano Beach, FL 33062 or to Frontier Elementary School 6701 180th Ave N., Loxahatchee, FL 33470 for their EASA program so a vegetable garden can be planted in her honor.
