Born in Iuka, Mississippi, Dusty spent his early years in Mississippi and Arkansas. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he dedicated his life to service—first as a police officer for the City of Memphis, and later in South Florida with the Oakland Park Police Department. There, he rose through the ranks to become a respected Homicide Detective, retiring in 1997. Even in retirement, Dusty’s tireless work ethic continued as he served as a Lead Security Officer for Tunica Casinos, until finally retiring to his most cherished role: full-time PaPa.
Dusty was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patsy, and their son, Randy. He also joins his parents, Thomas Edward and Jewell Rhodes; brothers Bobby McAnally and Gene Rhodes; and sisters Mayrene Bailey, Josephine Warren, Maureen Campbell, Patricia Ann Scott, and Evelyn Rhodes Heavener.
He is survived by his children, Charles Rhodes and Kendra Rhodes Walton, and her husband, Eric. He was a devoted PaPa to his seven grandchildren—Kaden, Kole, Dustin, Michele, Veronica, Nicholas, and Adrian—and a proud great-grandfather to Aydn, Kadence, Mason, Jocelyn, and Madelyn.
Dusty left the world a better and safer place through a life of unwavering service, fierce loyalty, and deep love. He will be remembered for his legendary storytelling, long heartfelt conversations, and the strength of character that touched all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to a scholarship fund being established in Dusty’s memory. This fund will support a graduating senior from the Oakland Park community with aspirations in law enforcement—a fitting tribute to a man who spent his life in service of justice and protection.
