
Howard Max McWhirter, age 90, died Friday, August 17, 2012 at Church Street Personal Care Home in Ecru. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and Training Union Director. He worked in the therapy department of the Pontotoc Hospital for 16 years and served as Pontotoc County Tax Assessor/Collector from September 1977 to December 1987. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion Post 16. He was a farmer and raised cattle, and an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching and listening to ballgames.
Services will be at 10 AM Monday, August 20, 2012 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnathan Baker officiating; burial will follow in the Ecru Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his sons: Dr. Randy McWhirter (Susan) of Pontotoc, MS and Teddy Windham (Mary) Aberdeen, MS; two sisters: Ann Roye and Robbie Gregory; one brother: Nickey McWhirter (Carolyn) all of Friendship; two sisters-in-law: Laurie McWhirter of Belmont, NC and Mae McWhirter of Tupelo; five grandchildren: Christy Bowling (Brent) of Hattiesburg, MS, Kelley McWhirter (Laura) of Metairie, LA, Tina Bernard (Al) of Lovell, WY, Stephanie Johnson (John) of Hamilton, MS and Brain Windham of Lovell, WY; thirteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Rodger and Ina Gilmer McWhirter; his wife: Flora Fairon Windham McWhirter; and two brothers: Pete McWhirter and Joe McWhirter.
Pallbearers will be: Kelley McWhirter, Brent Bowling, John Johnson, Brock McWhirter, Russell Thomas and Jim Brown.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Sunday and from 9 to 10 AM Monday at the funeral home.
