Marie McCord Dowdy

Marie McCord Dowdy, age 89, died Sunday, January 13, 2013 at her daughter’s residence in Pontotoc. She was born December 26, 1923, to Luther Bennett McCord and Margaret Jane “Jennie” Bigham McCord of Pontotoc. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church for 66 years and was the last active charter member of the church. She was the custodian of the church for 35 years. She helped her husband with the farm, and was a housewife. She loved to work in her flowers and garden, and loved spending time with her family. Being a Christian wife, mother and grandmother, cooking and taking care of her community and church family was among her favorite things to do.

Services will be at 2 PM Tuesday at Harmony Baptist Church with Mike Martin delivering the eulogy, Dr. Jim Carr and Rev. Jerry Caples officiating; burial will follow in the Harmony Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter: Linda Martin (Benny) ; a grandson: Mike Martin (Penny) of Pontotoc, MS; a sister-in-law: Virginia Dowdy of Columbus, MS and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Maymon Dowdy of 66 years, her parents; four brothers: Leo, James, Clyde and Samuel McCord; a sister: Florence McCord Anderson; a niece Wanda McCord Hall; and a granddaughter-in-law: April Caldwell Martin.

Pallbearers will be: Larry Anderson, Benny McCord, Tony McCord, Sam Hall, Billy Harrison, Neil Cruse, Sammy Sappington, Sammy Cruse, Tracy Clayton and Rev. Stark Aldridge.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Monday and from 10 to 1 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Harmony Baptist Church Building Fund, 3534 Hwy 345, Pontotoc, MS.
