
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 18, 2012 at White Funeral Home, Poplarville for Mr. Charles H. Byrd, Sr., 88, of Poplarville, Mississippi who died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 in Wesley Medical Center, Hattiesburg. Brother Brad Miles and Brother Joseph Hethcoat will officiate at the service. Burial will follow in the Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Byrd was a retired policeman with the Southern Pacific Railroad, a highly decorated U.S. Navy Veteran serving on the USS California in World War II; being the last Pearl Harbor survivor in Pearl River County; and a member of Olive Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Braxton and McCoy Moody Byrd; his wife, Mary Alice Byrd; one son, Herman Byrd; one brother, George Byrd; and one sister, Dorothy Jean Slade.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda (Joseph) Hethcoat; one son, Keith Byrd, all of Poplarville, MS; one brother, Rusty Buckley of Hattiesburg, MS; two sisters, Emma Jean Stranhan of Hattiesburg and Betty Byrd Lee of Gulfport, MS, MS; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 18, 2012 at White Funeral Home, 315 Highway 11 South, Poplarville, Mississippi 39470.
