Colon James Merritt departed this life into God’s presence, Thursday, April 17, 2025 at the age of 81. He was a proud member of the United Pentecostal Church, and later Spring Hill Baptist Church. He dedicated 30 years of his life working for AT&T. He also honorably served in the National Guard, embodying a deep commitment to his country and community.
After retiring, CJ enjoyed another 30 years of well-earned rest and adventure, much of it spent in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, where he found joy in fishing, crabbing and embracing the coastal life. In 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, CJ and Katherine moved back home to Poplarville where he was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, fish and garden. Whether fixing things around the house or hitting the road to travel, he poured energy and heart into everything he did.
CJ was known for his quick wit and joyful spirit, he was a true character-always smiling, joking and making others laugh. He never met a stranger and lit up every room with his presence. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met, simply by being himself – a man who loved life, loved his family, loved people and found happiness in simple pleasures. CJ will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Colon and Idell Merritt and two sisters, Bernice and Gloria Dell.
Left to forever cherish his memory is his loving wife of 55 years, Katherine Merritt; two daughters, Marie Carpenter and Paula Merritt; one sister, Alice Johnson (the late Bobby); six grandchildren, Shawn Carpenter, Spencer Windham (Stevie), Bailey Carpenter, Rachel Carpenter, Zach Carpenter (Carly) and Ahmad Harmon; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Family and friends are invited to attend CJ’s visitation on Monday, April 21, 2025 at 9:00 am, at White Funeral Home, 315 Hwy 11 South, Poplarville, Mississippi with funeral services beginning at 10:00 am, with Bro. Ken Rhodes officiating the service.
