Born on January 15, 1937, Harry was a lifelong resident of Poplarville and a man known for his strong character and steadfast devotion to his family. He graduated from Poplarville High School, Pearl River Community College and Mississippi State University, where he formed friendships that would carry through every season of his life; bonds that lasted a lifetime.
But the greatest bond of his life began on September 30, 1961, when he married June. Their 62-year marriage was built on mutual respect, deep affection, and a partnership admired by all who knew them. Their love was steady and strong—marked by unwavering devotion to each other. Together, they created a loving home and lasting family, with Harry providing strength and steady guidance throughout their life together.
With June, Harry was the co-founder and owner of Garrett Industries, a company that provided jobs and opportunities to hundreds in the community for more than twenty-five years. A natural leader, he was deeply respected by both colleagues and employees for his fairness, work ethic, and steady hand. Even long after the company closed its doors, Harry couldn’t go into town without running into a former employee or colleague—always being greeted with a smile, a story about the old days, and a word of appreciation.
Though accomplished in business, Harry’s greatest pride and purpose came from his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. He was the cornerstone of a warm and welcoming home, a place of laughter, stories, and a meticulously cared-for yard. His children—Hope, Brad, and Blaine—were raised in the shelter of his love and wisdom. More than a provider, Harry was a devoted example of what it meant to be a faithful husband and father. Through his actions, he taught his family the values of faith, humility, hard work, and kindness.
As a grandfather, Harry was a warm and encouraging presence. Whether he was cheering from the stands at games or spending quiet moments working in the yard and garden with his grandchildren nearby just to be close to him, Harry’s love for them was clear and deep. That love was felt by each of his children and grandchildren, who returned it in equal measure. Through his words and actions, he taught lessons that shaped their character and profoundly impacted their lives. To his children and grandchildren, Harry’s example continues to inspire the way they live.
Harry was a faithful member and former deacon of First Baptist Church of Poplarville, where he worshipped for decades. He will be remembered as a man who embodied the unwavering faith of one firmly rooted in Christ. Harry’s faith guided his life through every season and brought peace and assurance even in his final days.
He is preceded in death by his wife, June Smith Garrett; parents, Edward and Lucille Garrett; sister, Jackie; one infant brother, Eddie Bob; one infant granddaughter, Angel Garrett; and other beloved family members.
He is survived by his daughter, Hope (Bruce) Roberts; two sons, Brad (Sonya) Garrett and Blaine (Melissa) Garrett; grandchildren, Colby (Caitlin) Roberts, Garrett (Alli) Roberts, Blaine (Kristen) Garrett, Clay Garrett, Rhett Garrett, Ravyn June Garrett, Bree Ford, Taylor Turnage and Tyler Turnage; great-grandchildren Alice Garrett, Alayna Garrett, Halle Roberts, Addilyn Ly, Aubree Ford, Haven Roberts, Scarlett Roberts, and Heidi Roberts; along with extended family and dear friends.
His family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Gina Ladner and Sharon Harges, whose loving help and companionship blessed both Harry and June in their final years.
A service honoring Harry’s life will be held at White Funeral Home, 315 Hwy 11 South, Poplarville, on Friday, August 15, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bryant Barnes, officiating. Burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will take place prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 am. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
