Mavis Marie Herndon departed this life into God’s presence on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at the age of 85. Mavis was born on March 25, 1939 to Elbert and Della Dedeaux in Hancock County, Mississippi. She was raised in Poplarville where she met her husband, Douglas and raised their son, Dennis and daughter, Ramona. Mavis was an independent woman who was hard working and strong in her faith. She attended College Heights Baptist Church and enjoyed the outdoors where you could often find her outside working in her flowerbeds. She enjoyed puzzles and word searches, along with sewing, making quilts and other special pieces for her family and grandchildren. Mavis will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Herndon; daughter, Ramona Herndon; brothers, Elvin Dedeaux and Quinton Dedeaux; and her sisters, Comeldia Herndon and Sylvia Ray Boyles.
Left to forever cherish her memory are her son, Dennis “Jake” (Donna) Herndon; grandchildren, Chelbie Engle, Hannah Herndon and Breanna (Blaine) Ladner; her great-grandchildren, Bella Ladner and Beau Ladner; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Funeral services, officiated by Reverend Michael Brown and Reverend Walter Pierce, will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at White Funeral Home of Poplarville starting at noon. Friends are invited to join the family for visitation from 10:00 am until the service begins. Burial will immediately follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with BJ Peterson, Daniel Davis, Junior Herndon, Junior Pierce, Kenneth Mitchell and Keith Ladner and John Davis assisting as pallbearers.
