

Mike Elwood Hines, 87, died peacefully June 15, 2015 after an extended illness at his home in Crossroads Mississippi. His beloved wife, Velma Marie Hines, preceded in death in 2004. Mr. and Mrs. Hines were married for 55 years.
Mr. Hines served and traveled the world for 20 years in the United States Air Force, followed by several years at Crane Navel Weapon Support Center in Indiana, and eventually on to John C. Stennis Space Center. Mr. Hines served as an ordained Deacon in many Baptist churches throughout his lifetime. His community volunteer efforts included the Lions Club, and, one of his favorites, the Baptist Children’s Village, in Wiggins. Mr. Hines also received the 2005 Hospice Caretaker of the Year Award from Forrest General Hospital. He was a member and Past Master of Sherrard Byrd Masonic #353 in Poplarville, Mississippi. He was 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He will long be remembered for his gift of storytelling, quick wit, and sense of humor. Mr. Hines was warm, kind, gracious, and ever hospitable to visitors and guests.
Mr. Hines is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teri Hines of Kiln, Mississippi; his daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Bill Alt of Columbia City, Indiana; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Wendy Hines of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; his brother-in-law, Horace Wheat; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Betty Hines; grandchildren, Bridgotte, Jamie, Kevin, Allison, Brandon and Nikolas; great-grandchildren, Devin, Ethan, Brynlee, Ainsleigh, Ever, and a host of extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, followed by a funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, Crossroads, Mississippi. This will include a Masonic memorial service and will conclude with an Air Force Honor Guard ceremony at the burial site.
