With great sadness we announce the passing of Albert Weber on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the age of 90 years. Predeceased by wife Betty, his parents, George and Odelia, three sisters, Margaret, Jean, Emelia and three brothers, Bill, Luke and Tom. Albert is survived by children, Lorna (Steve), Vern (Cindy), Kevin (Mary), Dave (Lisa), Byron (Melanie), grandchildren Justin (Shayna), Kaitlin, Dylan (Melina), Ian, Ben & Ayden and great grandson Dawson. Albert is also survived by sisters, Marie, Magdelena and Rita, brother, Ben, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Albert was born and raised on a farm in Wilkie, Saskatchewan. He always spoke fondly of his years on the farm and growing up with his 10 brothers and sisters. Albert considered himself a farmer at heart and he remained an early riser all of his life and enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, maintaining his yard and tending to his fruit trees. He was a very industrious person by nature and did not like to sit idle.
Albert worked for the CPR in Wilkie, from 1951 until he moved to Port Alberni in 1956. He worked at the Alberni Plywood Mill from 1956 until his retirement in 1991; in addition, he worked weekends at the old Barclay Hotel during his early years.
Albert and Betty were married in 1957, raised five children and shared in over 65 years of marriage. Family was very important to Albert and he cherished his children, grandchildren, great grandson and extended family. For Albert, the best part of any holiday was having family gathered around the dining room table to share a special meal together. Many happy times were also had during numerous trips to Saskatchewan to visit family and when family came from the prairies to the west coast for summer holidays.
Physical activity, fitness and sport were important aspects of Albert’s life. He enjoyed curling, playing ball, jogging, weight training and swimming and he loved to polka. In 1999, Albert’s softball team won the gold medal at the BC Seniors Games. Albert was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching most sports on TV, especially hockey, baseball, football and curling.
Throughout his life Albert actively volunteered in many events and projects within the Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus including the 4th degree Assembly. He was very proud to have served on the K of C executive for many years and in almost every executive position, including Grand Knight. Over the years, Albert was involved in Knights of Columbus fundraising, blood drives, organizing social events and youth groups, helping at pancake breakfasts, assisting at church with ushering and the collection and serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. Albert highly valued the spiritual and social aspects of belonging to the church community.
