Angie Joe was Huu-ay-aht and born in Port Alberni. She lived a majority of her life with her sister Eunice in Numakimyis (Sarita). She was fluent in the Nuuchahnulth language and spent many years dedicated to teaching in Bamfield Community School, Haa-huu-payuk School, and North Island College. She was also a language mentor to many who have now moved on to be language teachers themselves. Her passion to ensure the language was passed on to future generations was demonstrated in all that she shared. She supported language translation and curriculum development right up to her last days. Speaking and teaching the language brought her great joy. She was a gifted basket weaver. She learned her cedar and grass weaving from watching her aunties and sister Eunice. Her weaving was intricate and is now treasured far and wide. Her life in Numakimyis was filled with harvesting and preserving various traditional foods such fruit, berries, fish, shellfish, seafoods, and deer. Angie also enjoyed playing card games, Ten Grand, Yahtzee and puzzling. She loved her animals and had numerous dogs and cats through her lifetime. She also had a special connection to wildlife wherever she went. She loved talking to the animals and birds. She leaves a wealth of relatives in Huu-ay-aht, Tseshaht and Hupacasath.
Angie was loved by her family, relatives and friends and will be sadly missed.
