September 26, 1941 – April 14, 2022
Born Dagrunn Irene Jørgensen in Namsos, Norway, Irene lived her young life with thoughts and dreams of adventure. She moved to England at age 16 where she mastered the English language before returning to Norway with even more ambitions to travel. She worked on passenger ships before going to school to become a radio operator. It was in Bergen Norway, attending radio operator school, that she would meet her future husband, Harald. Married after 6 months, the two of them took to the sea for 7 years before settling in Port Alberni starting an all-new adventure.
Irene worked various jobs in the Alberni Valley, including hotel clerking and housekeeping. She also kept busy with local churches and community volunteering. In 1974, Irene and Harald welcomed their son, Roy Gunnar. Irene loved motherhood and embraced the work of raising her son… and it was work!
Irene was passionate about preparing food; from cooking, to baking, to canning, there was always something delicious on the go. She loved mealtime and relished the chance to play host. She made many friends who enjoyed her sense of humor, positive outlook, and good heart. Irene was a spiritual person believing in God and in the power of love and kindness. She would often remind people that, “Life is good.”
There will be no service at this time but instead a request to remember Irene fondly, reminisce on all the good times, and to smile when you think of her.
Irene is predeceased by her two sisters in Norway (Ranveig Olsen and Nancy Williksen) and her husband of 51 years, Harald Mundheim. She is survived by her son, Roy and her “favorite daughter-in-law” Lesly Engdahl, along with many friends and family in Norway and Canada. She will be deeply missed.
The family of Irene Mundheim would like to thank all the nurses and staff at West Coast General Hospital for their support and care. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The West Coast General Hospital Foundation. www.wcghfoundation.com
