It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Ronald Allan Tramer passed away peacefully at the age of 69, surrounded by his loving wife and children, on December 3, 2019 at Nanaimo General Hospital.
Ron was born in Winnipeg on December 14, 1949, he moved to Port Alberni when he was 16 years old and spent the rest of his life in the community. In 1972, he married the love of his life, Carolin Zimmerman, and together they raised two children in the community.
Ron was a jack of many trades. He worked in forestry for much of his life, starting out in the bush until he got the opportunity to take his heavy duty mechanic training through Sproat Lake Division. His career path transitioned to safety, working first for Weyhauser before forming his own company – Effective Safety Management, which specialized in auditing for forestry companies. In addition to running his own company, Ron also worked for several years as the city’s coroner. After his retirement, he worked alongside his family as a host for six years at Snow Creek Campsite in the summer.
Ron was well known in the community, not only for his career, but also through the many organizations for which he offered his time. This year Ron celebrated his 37th year of sobriety and, in that time, he has walked with many people on their journeys toward sobriety. He was president of the Alano Club for many years, as well as chair with the Alberni Drug and Alcohol Prevention Society (ADAPS).
He was a board member of the Metis Association and general manager and president of the Port Alberni Junior B Bandits Hockey team. He also served as the risk manager for the Alberni Valley Minor Hockey Association for the last year and a half.
Ron was also a faithful member of Jericho Road Church.
Those who knew Ron knew he was no-nonsense. He believed in making choices and being accountable for the consequences. He would walk with you on your journey, but he wouldn’t take it for you and, in that, many found within them a strength they may not have known was there.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 47 years Carolin Tramer, daughter Samantha Barrowcliff (Mike), son Stephen Tramer (Danielle), grandchildren Ethan Tramer, Ryann Tramer, TJ Barrowcliff, and Justin Barrowcliff. He was also survived by siblings Bob Tramer (Sandy), Judy Schneider, Eleanor Bratt, Audrey Brown (Tom), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Stephanie Jodel Tramer and his very good friend and brother-in-law, Gerry Bratt.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests that a donation be made in his name to a charity of your choice, as Ron was involved in many local organizations. It was important to Ron that he help people, and his family would like to encourage others to get involved in whatever is important to them to make a difference in the lives of others in the community in the way Ron did for all of his life. He will be remembered by many for the difference he has made in Port Alberni and he will be missed dearly.
A celebration of life will be held on December 14, 2019 (Ron’s 70th Birthday) at 11:00 am at Jericho Road Church, 5100 Tebo Ave, Port Alberni, BC.
