Not being totally enamored with farm life, he followed his oldest brother Paul west and landed in Port Alberni at the age of 19. He first worked for Kelly Douglas, delivering produce to grocery stores.
Shortly after, a local contractor asked if he was interested in driving a truck. The wages were double what he was making so he was in! His training consisted of riding in the jump seat the first trip and after that he was on his own. When things were tight for work, he tried working in the sawmill and did some construction at the papermill, but he had fallen in love with woods, and driving logging truck became a forty year career. When dad moved to town, one of the first people he met, probably in Tingey’s Pool room, was Dale Chase. They became great friends and remained so throughout their entire lives.
Vic was a good ball player, pool player, nicknamed “Sharky”, Curler, played and coached hockey, and loved to dance which he did well into his 90’s.
He loved camping and trailering locally with friends and towing the trailer to Manitoba many times to visit family there.
Dad was one of the best whistlers we had ever heard and often serenaded the whole neighbourhood while puttering in the backyard.
Vic’s greatest love was family, camping, playing cards, cooking dinners, always making sure that everyone had plenty of everything and was always the last to dish up. And of course, there was always goodies for those of us with a sweet tooth for dessert.
Dad was kind to all, was loved and respected by so many. He will be sorely missed by us all.
Predeceased by his parents, Harry and Mary Frykas, his three brothers Paul, Leonard, Art, his first wife Idell in 1970, and second wife of 35 years Marcelle in 2009 .
