Bill left the place and people he loved the most on the day after his 80th birthday.
He was the third generation of Thomsons to farm at McCoy Lake, in the Alberni Valley. With the exception of 2 years in college he lived his entire life on the family farm. Bill graduated from ADSS in 1963. In his youth he was a gifted athlete excelling in basketball, hockey, and lacrosse. He was a hard-nosed member of a national championship lacrosse team where his solid checking earned him the nickname “Stumpy.” Bill was a dedicated and enthusiastic 4-H club member, showing Ayrshire calves and making many life-long friends. His children followed in his footsteps, and he remained a staunch and generous 4-H supporter for the rest of his life. He was a proud alumnus of the agriculture program at Lakeland College in Vermillion Alberta. The many friendships he forged there from 1964 to 66 endure to this day.
Bill took great pride in his Scots heritage, and the vocation of farming. He was greatly esteemed by everyone he touched in the agricultural community. His wise advice was often sought and generously given. He was a tireless supporter of the Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market, a life member of the Alberni District Fall Fair Assn. and a life member of the Alberni Farmers Institute, all were sources of more enduring friendships. He was more than a friend and neighbour to those who farmed nearby. He was an ally, fiercely supportive and always willing to lend a hand in any way possible.
Despite his many friendships and his affection for the farm community Bill’s true love was for his wife and family. He was preceded by his wife and soulmate, Wanda (Dezi) Thomson and parents Jim and Vivian Thomson. He is survived by his children, Billy (Kristie ), Kryssie (Brian), and Kasha. Grandchildren, Taylor, Jordan, Cody, Karysa, and Ayden. Brother Gordon Thomson, and sister Marlene Crosson (Earl). Many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Rest well good friend.
A celebration of Bill’s life is planned to take place August 30th at 2:00 pm on the farm at The Knotty Cowgirl located at 7676 Pacific Rim Highway in Port Alberni.
In lieu of flowers, we’re asking friends and family to donate to Vancouver Island 4-H, the organization our Dad, Bill Thomson (aka Farmer Bill), dedicated his life to.
