His parents had met during World War II, his father of German descent was stationed in the Philippines, where he met Frank’s mother. They moved to Pittsburgh and married, having a daughter and son, and owning a successful neighborhood market before Estelle tragically died of an unconfirmed illness in 1950 when Frank was only two years old. Frank grew up in a township near Pittsburgh, PA called McKee’s Rocks, where he and his sister were raised by his loving paternal grandmother and other relatives.
He attended catholic school through grade school, was a boy scout, and after graduating from Stowe High School (now known as Sto-Rox high School), enlisted in the Army, serving from 1968 until 1971 in Vietnam, where he served as a Supply Officer. After returning home, he pursued an education in computer programming, but turned to construction and odd jobs, as Pittsburgh was struggling economically at that time, and it was difficult to find consistent gainful employment.
Frank eventually traveled to New Jersey during a construction boom to install aluminum siding, moving his family there. Then in 1985, He and his family moved to Port Charlotte, FL to start a new life. He began with working for a screened enclosure installation company, then for glass installation company, and in 1991, started his own aluminum installation company, Koller Aluminum, LLC. He owned and operated this company until approximately 2008, when due to age and the slow economy, he decided to semi-retire, doing small projects and worked in maintenance at an assisted living facility for a short time.
Frank was a very outgoing person, had many friends everywhere he went. Loved playing cards, shooting pool, fishing, watching sports (was a fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams), and having a few drinks with friends. He always excelled at whatever attempted to do, whether a hobby, sport or work. He was very strict of the quality of the work he did; it had to be perfect. He was also very good at selling and negotiating. He would always try to help friends, whether offering them a place to stay or giving them employment. He was devoted father and husband, supporting when his stepson was paralyzed, when his son was also paralyzed later, and supported his wife as she battled cancer, kidney failure and heart disease over a twenty-year span. He had attended non-denominational Christian churches for several years, including starting and attending a Calvary Chapel in Port Charlotte with his wife and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Franklin Koller and Estelle Payumno Koller, sister Estel Koller Bulgarelli (1947-2021), and wife Christine Anthos Koller (1951-2012, married 1980 – 2012).
He is survived by his son, Matthew Koller of Port Charlotte, FL., daughter Kimberly Jean Large of Conneaut Lake, PA., grandchildren Nichole Marie Spriggs and Kotye Thomas Large, great grandchildren Zachary Matthew Spriggs, Layla Jolene Spriggs, Ivie Arieanna Spriggs, and Feenix Rae Large.
Frank will be cremated and placed with his wife at Sarasota National Cemetery, Section 7 Site 432.
