Suddenly, on January 14, 2010, Gordon Carlton Baer crossed through the veil. He had struggled with ill health and finally succumbed to the ravages of this temporal life. He was born in Baltimore, MD to Gordon W. and Barbara Goldsborough Baer. He married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Eberwein Baer, after serving with the Navy Seabees in 2 tours of Viet Nam. He became a Baltimore County cop and worked for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1988. The bonds that he formed with this family of blue continued after retirement and brought him great joy. Relocating to Florida after retiring, he again worked for 15 years for the Charlotte County Sheriff's Department, having just retired 6 months previous to his passing. He again formed great friendships there and which lifted and satisfied him.
He was an excellent father to Sarah and Adam Cathleen Baer, and was a very happy grandfather to his wonderful grandchildren, Robby and Jesse.
Gordon also leaves his sisters, Sharon Busker and Sue Chuck Kausch, and a brother, Glenn Sandy, to mourn his loss. He also loved his many nieces and nephews and enjoyed watching them grow up and begin to have families, too.
His family and friends were his life. He was an honest and good man who understood that serving people in his chosen profession was a difficult, and often thankless, job but he did it well. He encouraged his children to live in a similar way. Sarah has taught and mentored children at her "And 5678 Dance Studio" for years. Adam has helped many people during his career in the Englewood Fire District. His wife, Cathy, has coached Pop Warner cheerleaders and has mentored these girls, too. Serving is the path this family chooses.
The viewing for Gordon Baer will be held on Monday, January 18th from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8, at Lemon Bay Funeral Home, 2 Buchans Landing, Englewood, FL 34223, 941 474-5575. It is located at the end of Dearborn St. in Englewood. The funeral will be held Tuesday, January 19th, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3000 E. Venice Ave., FL. Interment will follow immediately in Gulf Pines Memorial Park, 2401 Englewood Rd.
In lieu of flowers, people can make a contribution to the charity of their choice. You may express your condolences to the family at lemonbayfh.com
