James Alexander Brown, 88 of Punta Gorda, FL, passed away Friday, December 13, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 13, 1925 in Queens, New York to Alexander and Adella Brown (nee Schuerman). He became an orphan at the age of five and was raised in Laurelton, New York by his loving Aunt and Uncle, Edna & Otto Schafhautle. James proudly served his country as a Flight Officer during WWII for the Army Air Corps. Upon separation from military service, he completed his degree in chemistry at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York and embarked on a career working with Allied Chemical in Morristown NJ, American Hoechst Chemical in Bridgewater, NJ and Reichhold Chemical in White Plains, NY. He retired to Punta Gorda with his wife, Marion Brown in 1976 after they visited the area and they fell in love with the harbor. Jim and Marion owned and operated L&M Hobby in downtown Punta Gorda from 1976 to 1992.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by his son James Jr. (Leilani) Brown, his daughters, Linda (Bruce) Seward and Janice (Jim) Brady, his three grandchildren, Amber, Christopher and Chelsea and his 2 great-grandchildren, Tyler & Savannah.
Services will be held privately with inurnment at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice at tidewell.org.
