Born on December 5, 1939, in Washington, D.C., Tom lived a rich and fulfilling life marked by his dedication to his country, his passion for knowledge, and the love he shared with those around him.
Tom's early life in the nation's capital set the stage for his impressive academic achievements. He proudly graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1967. His thirst for knowledge and cultural understanding led him to further his education at the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, Virginia, where he mastered Spanish in 1983 and Turkish, equipping him for his remarkable career in international service.
His professional journey was as diverse as it was impactful. Tom served as a Foreign Service Officer for the US Department of State. His assignments took him to Beirut, Lebanon; Kinshasa, Zaire; and Ankara, Turkey, where he excelled as a political officer. Tom's keen analytical skills enabled him to produce insightful reports that informed US policy towards these regions. In Buenos Aires, Argentina, he monitored scientific advancements with a focus on nuclear programs, fostering scientific exchanges between Argentine and American institutions.
Domestically, Tom supervised a team in Miami, Florida, where he kept a close watch on political and economic developments in the Caribbean Basin. His contribution to the US Department of Defense as a Project Officer was equally significant, with responsibilities in Vietnam and Laos that included constructing and maintaining Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) airfields.
Before his illustrious career in civil service, Tom proudly served in the United States Army Special Forces as a Staff Sergeant, where he held various positions, including Combat Engineer, Medic, and Infantryman. His military service, which included time in Vietnam, demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his country.
Tom's expertise also extended to the private sector, where he worked as a Project Engineer for the Plantation Pipeline, applying his technical acumen to support operations across a three-state area.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Tom was a pillar in his community. He served as the President of the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association, was a member of the City of Punta Gorda Code Enforcement Board, and directed the Charlotte County Chapter for the American Heart Association. His volunteer work was a testament to his generous spirit, contributing to the For the Love of Kids Christmas Dinner, the Math Lab at Edison Community College, and the Adult Education Program of Charlotte County.
Those who knew Tom intimately would describe him as a homebody with a love for the simple pleasures in life. He enjoyed watching the news, reading the newspaper, and taking leisurely naps. Reading and engaging in the mental challenge of completing newspaper crossword puzzles were among his favorite pastimes. Tom was renowned for his analytical mind, intelligence, and wisdom, traits that guided him through a life of service and community involvement.
Tom is preceded in death by his mother, Mildren E. Brunner Poole, and his father, Thomas Henry Poole. He is survived by his loving long-time care partner, Adriana Poole; his aunt, Janet A. Hall; and his childhood friend, Tom Raybould, who will all miss his presence dearly.
