William D. Armitage, 90, of Punta Gorda, FL, formerly of Bergenfield, NJ and Mattapoisett, MA, passed away November 14, 2009. He was born November 18, 1918 in New Bedford, MA to William and Agnes Armitage. Mr. Armitage was a WWII Army Veteran, serving in the South Pacific. He worked as a Textile Engineer for Burlington Industries at the Empire State Bldg in NYC before retiring in 1971. In Bergenfield, NJ, he served as a councilman and was the Mayor serving from 19xx to 19xx. He served as the Fire Commissioner in 19xx and was an Elder of the Old South Presbyterian Church. After retiring, he moved to Mattapoisett, MA where he served as Treasurer for the Congregational Church and was a board member with the Council on Aging and a member of the Lions Club. He moved to Punta Gorda, FL in 2007.
He is survived by his sons, William Jane Armitage III and Richard Deborah Armitage, all of Punta Gorda, FL; grandchildren, William Amy Armitage IV, Heather Edward Szmigiel, Seth Armitage and Megan Armitage; great grandchildren, Gianna, Zakary and Ryan; and his brother, James Armitage. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Frances Armitage in 1999 and a brother Russell Armitage.
A Memorial Service will be held next spring in Mattapoisett, MA. The family requests donations in memory of William to Meals on Wheels, 3082 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte, FL 33952
