Dear Harry, Lisa, Lori and families.
Words fail me - such an unexpected loss.
It's amazing to me that I first met Hazel 50 years ago-in 1967.
We expect those we've always known to always be there.
My thoughts are with you.  I trust all your good memories
will sustain you through this difficult time.

Hazel was my sister, my mentor and my best friend 

Growing up with Hazel in the late 1940s and 50s was great fun and I could always learn a lot from being with my big sister!  On my first day at our one room country school of Meadowdale, grades one to eight, I was a new first grader.  Hazel was there and she rescued me from the jabbing fingers of an eighth grade boy who was blindfolded during an innocent game of Blind Man's Bluff!  That was pretty much the story our whole lives  Hazel was watchful, caring, inspiring, and always there with a rescue net.  

When Hazel lived in her tiny rooming house room during her four years of high school in Canora, then her bank job in town, I got to stay with her and we did fun things like going to movies, playing board and card games, singing along to the radio with sheet music, and dancing.  As a young woman, Hazel had a wonderful singing voice.  At home on the farm, we enjoyed things like baking cakes from scratch with our Mom, preparing for special visits from our many aunts, uncles and cousins.  In winter, we'd ride with our Dad in a sleigh pulled by his favorite team of black horses, to get that perfect Christmas tree!  The next day, usually December 24th, we'd go by sleigh to town to buy one present for each of our family, get home, wrap the present, decorate the tree, and wait excitedly for Christmas morning!  It was magic.  One year the tree came crashing down during the night!  After the untimely passing of our father, Hazel instigated our family's move to Vancouver and that was an unforgettable adventure!  Seeing the Rockies for the first time from the train observation car was spectacular!    

During the years that followed, Hazel worked, loved buying beautiful clothes and shoes, styling her hair and polishing her nails.  She made many friends and married her lifelong partner Harry with whom she raised her beautiful daughters, Lisa and Lori.  Hazel revelled in their accomplishments and recently those of her special grandsons, Bryan and Bradley.  Hazel eagerly and selflessly put her family life first above all.  She met all challenges headlong, living by the saying that the early bird gets the worm.  She was definitely a team player, a self-starter, curious, endlessly interested in politics, local and world affairs.  Hazel never walked away from a lively debate and never shied away from giving her honest opinion.  She had a quick sense of humour and loved to challenge and tease, all the while with a twinkle in her eye.  She and Harry loved travelling and took many trips to places in Europe, North America and Hawaii - cruising was one of her favorites.  At home, she loved her long walks through local parks where she was a keen observer of nature.  She would often present herself on my porch, bringing a handful of wild berries or something she'd found interesting on her trails  even stories of seeing a bear!  

I am so happy that Hazel and I were able to take one last trip to Saskatchewan together in 2012, visiting our old farm and visiting with relatives.  I will remember the days when Hazel and I explored Vancouver and reminisced about our early days in the city.  I will miss all of our visits and am eternally thankful for all the many days we spent together - rest well, my dear sister Hazel.

My sincere condolences to Hazel's family. As newcomers to the strata so many years ago, she made Doug and I feel so very welcome. We soon saw that she brought her unique passion to everything she did. She loved nature  whether it was the example of her daily trek in Mundy Park, the care of her perennial garden or the annual joy she felt in watching the swallows nest by her porch. She loved current events and Dogwood presentations  and if she could have, most of the world's problems would already have been solved in discussions on her front lawn. She loved her family  and loved to share the many stories of her grandchildren's successes. As a neighbour and friend, I will miss Hazel greatly.

Cousin Hazel stands out in my memory as a feisty  strong women,I will miss her emails  we had many good visits and thinking one more visit ,one more hug as the song by Diamond Rio "One More Day" but we do have all the memories.

Cousin Hazel stands out in my memory as a lively teenage girl (I remember a fantastic dressup time we girls had in grandma's attic on the occasion of Aunt Polly's wedding celebrations).  Hazel loved high school and loved her teachers.  When I moved to Vancouver Hazel took me out one weekend to one of the Gulf Islands when we had a fantastic visit and tea on the lawn of some guesthouse. My deepest sympathies to family and friends and I know we'll miss Hazel very much.   Cousin Tunya
