Patrick Bryce (born Patrick Bryce Seneviratne), left us on February 16th, 2025, at the age of 63, following a bout of ill-health. He is survived by his mother, Barbara (Poppy), his sister, Michelle (Dan), his brother, Gerard (Jane), his son, James, and his nephews.
Patrick was born to Barbara and Patrick Seneviratne in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on January 12, 1962. There, he attended Wesley College as a playful kid and wore the moniker “Pretty Blue Eyes.” In September of 1979, he moved with his father and siblings to Nanaimo, BC, and attended Nanaimo Senior Secondary School. Later, he attended Malaspina College in Nanaimo and graduated with a diploma in psychiatric work. During this time, he enjoyed growing vegetables, raising rabbits, and frequenting the Victoria bars, before moving to Vancouver in 1988. He then attended UBC soon after to upgrade his studies.
An avid appreciator of romance, Patrick was first married at the age of 19. He then caught the “love bug” a few more times throughout his life, having his only son with his third wife, Iseko. He was a passionate man and happiest in life when he could share the company of a loving woman (and purchase new properties with them).
During his life, Patrick travelled to many places including Japan, China, and Hawaii. He loved camping and the outdoors. He had a vibrant singing voice that he used to keep tunes alongside his beloved mother. He also demonstrated a keen interest in luxury items. In particular, he is remembered for his affinity for watches, clothing, cars, coins from his travels, flat-capped hats, jewelry, and his many colognes. He would never leave the house without smelling like one of his fancy fragrances, or without one of his watches, or without the garden looking immaculate, or without his favourite snack, pickles, in the fridge. In his more active years, he loved playing cricket and going on long walks and drives to appreciate the architecture of the local neighborhoods. During those drives, he loved to listen to 50’s/60’s jazz pop, classic rock, and, in later years (for some reason), Pitbull.
While sometimes reserved, Patrick had a dry sense of humour and comedic cynicism that made him a welcome addition to family gatherings and events. His rolling laugh will never be forgotten.
As a professional, he served Venture, Cloverly Houses, and Fraser Health collectively for over 20 years, and helped countless patients overcome their psychological conditions and their addiction problems. In some cases, he even risked his own life to save patients. His coworkers respected him for the dutifulness and enthusiasm he brought to the workplace, and part of his legacy will live on through the lives he positively impacted as a mental health professional.
He will be missed.
