He was born and raised in Port Dickinson to parents Donald and Wilma Chandler. His youth was spent with his beloved dog Tippy, and laughing through countless adventures with his sister Carol Chandler, whom he loved dearly. He graduated from Milligan College with a bachelor’s degree is Psychology. After college, Gary was stationed in the United States Army in Frankfurt, Germany during the Vietnam War, where he selflessly cared for the mental health of fellow soldiers.
After his enlistment, Gary spent much of his time doing what he loved most, fishing and camping in the Adirondack Mountains with his best friends Jim and Doug. He was an environmentalist at heart, and oftentimes picked up and brought home more garbage on fishing trips than actual fish. His love of music was undeniable, and he was never far from a Dan Fogelberg, Foo Fighters, or Beatles album.
Always quick with a joke and the life of the party, Gary made everyone around him laugh and his lovable personality made him a friend to all. He had a nickname for everyone he loved, and was famous for his ability to make up silly rhyming songs at the expense of his family, friends, and pets.
In 1986, Gary married his bride Sherry, and it wasn’t long before they were joined by his children Kate and John.
He also loved his animals, which brought him great comfort and joy all throughout his life.
Gary was a selfless man who found great joy in serving others. This was evident in his volunteer work, sitting with hospice patients so they wouldn’t be alone, and delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors in need.
Gary is predeceased by his parents, Donald H. Chandler Sr. and Wilma Chandler.
He is survived by his wife Sherry; his son, John Chandler; his daughter, Kate Roberts (Richard); two grandchildren, Parker and Cullen Roberts; sister, Carol (Pat) Chandler, two brothers-in-law, David (Lisa) and Stephen Cowperthwait; nieces, Teresa (Darrin) Chandler and Rebecca Cowperthwait; nephews Rob(Kim) Chandler, Mark(Sabrina) Chandler, Chris, Matthew (Ashley), and Steven (Meredith) Cowperthwait, and his faithful companions, Drake and “Hallie”.
A private service and celebration of life will be held at the convenience of Gary’s family.
