

Mike Browne passed away peacefully on May 17, 2021, Warrington, Pa. Born Dec. 12, 1931 in NYC, he grew up in the South Bronx the son of Irish immigrant parents Mary (O’Malley) and Michael J. Sr. His brother, Bob, was his only sibling. He graduated from Regis HS in 1949, and was always proud of this Jesuit education. After graduating from Fordham University and a military stint (‘54-’56) in the Army as a 1st Lt. that was cut short by a near-fatal accident in Newfoundland, he came back to NY, working a few jobs before becoming a teacher, the career he would follow for the rest of his professional life. During the period right before teaching, he met and married Helen (Mangan), and they settled in the Bronx. Sons Larry, Steve and Jim were born, and in 1967 they moved to Lake Grove on Long Island. A lifelong coach and official, his basketball teams at Rice High School in Manhattan were annual contenders in the highly competitive NY Catholic HS league, including a city championship in 1966. He continued coaching basketball on Long Island at Centereach HS from 1972-1982. He was also a baseball coach and umpire, at Salesian HS in New Rochelle in the ‘60’s, where the team won a Turnpike Championship in “66. He spent many years involved with the Three Village Midget Baseball League, where he served as president and other leadership positions. His teaching in NYC schools, Newfield and Centereach HS led his to move to administration. He served as asst. Principal and acting principal at Centereach and Newfield, and athletic director at Bellport and Southold School districts.
In 2012 he moved to Bucks County, Pa.to spend more time watching his beloved granddaughter Megan grow up. He cherished his time with her, getting to witness her graduate High School and enroll at the University of Rochester, where she just completed her Sophomore year.
A lifelong SF/NY baseball Giants fan, he loved many sports, but baseball and basketball were always his favorites.
