He was the beloved son of John B. Lesser and the late Judith A. Lesser. Thomas was a loving brother to Alice Laino (Robert), John Scott Lesser (Richelle), and Karen Von Minden (Edward), and was predeceased by his brother, Christopher C. Lesser. He was a devoted and adored uncle to Christine Wagner (Robert) and Hunter Storm Von Minden.
Known to many as “Tommy,” he proudly served with the Fire Department of the City of New York for 20 years before retiring. As an FDNY firefighter, he selflessly assisted at Ground Zero during the tragic events of September 11, 2001, exemplifying courage, dedication, and service to others.
Tommy embraced life with boundless energy and joy. He had a deep love for music—especially 1970s rock and roll—and could often be found enjoying the sounds of bands like Led Zeppelin. He loved playing softball, spending time at the beach, and taking long walks through the village of Port Jefferson. Always active and social, he was rarely found alone—he cherished being surrounded by friends, but nothing brought him more happiness than time spent with his family, whom he loved deeply and unconditionally. His warm smile and infectious spirit could light up any room, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Thomas’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, honoring his lifelong commitment to service and sacrifice.
Thomas John Lesser will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
