Walter Thornton Thomson, Jr was born March 14, 1920 to Walter and Margaret Thomson. He had three brothers: Alan Thomson, and Jerry Thomson who presently reside in Florida, and the late Robert Thomson. After high school, Walter studied for the priesthood at Cathedral Seminary, but left before becoming a priest. He earned a Bachelors degree taking night classes. At an early age, he developed a love for reading that lasted his entire life. It seemed fitting that this love would take him to Doubleday Publishing Company where he worked for many years, eventually becoming the head of Distribution.
His greatest love was for his wife, Rose, who he was devoted to until her death in June 2002. They met on the Staten Island ferry. They had five children, Peggy, Bobby, Wally, Mickey and Ronnie. Walter is survived by eleven grandchildren: Christine Lombardo, John Piotrowski, Bryan Valvana, Gregory Thomson, Sean Thomson, Bonnie Thomson, Meagan Lindsey, Stacey Guevara, Michael Thomson, Jr, RonnieThomson, Jr, and Sean Thomson. Walter had four great grandsons: Benjamin Lombardo, Matthew Lombardo, Christopher Lindsey and Anthony Guevara. There are many nieces and nephews who will miss his dry sense of humor, and sharp wit.
Walter and Rose lived in Levittown, Selden, Greenlawn, Hicksville, and then finally retired to Crystal River, Florida. The last twenty five years of their marriage they resided in a retirement community in Brooksville. After suffering a stroke in 2000, Walter eventually moved to the Stony Brook Veterans Home where he received loving care from the staff there for the next ten years until his death. His daughter, Peg, was at his side when he passed on February 22nd.
A memorial service at O B Davis Funeral Home in Port Jefferson Station will be held on Saturday, March 2nd from 2-4:30 PM. Following a funeral mass, burial with military honors will take place at Houston National Cemetary, Texas where Walter's beloved wife, Rose Marie, is buried.
