Gilbert left the 4th grade to work at Peterson Restaurant in Palacios to provide for his siblings. He later married Dominga Rodriguez on April 14th, 1953, and they were married for 70 years. He was employed with ALCOA for 34 years and retired in 1986. Gilbert was a hard worker and an amazing father, who provided for his family selflessly while teaching his children life skills and independence.
Gilbert resided in Palacios, TX and moved to Victoria, TX in 1974. He later moved to the “Funny Farm” in Olivia, TX and then finally settled in Port Lavaca until his death. He enjoyed being a mechanic and inventing strange gadgets, beer making, fishing, golfing, hunting, and pool. He earned nicknames like “el cepillo” and Whistler. Gilbert continued to play and teach pool up to the age of 87, and was known as “Coach”.
Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Mary Lou Vega, Irene Benavidez, and Lucy Cano, and daughter; Senovia Lenore Garcia. He is survived by his wife; Dominga Yanes, daughters; Judy Pena (Tony), Consuelo Perez (Merced), Norma Hernandez, and Karen Williams (Keith), sons; Gilbert R. Yanes and Christopher Yanes, sisters; Margaret Nunez, Gloria Sanchez, Joanne Linden, and Linda Villagran, brothers; Joe Yanes, Victor Yanes, and Joe Morales, 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, from 8-10 a.m., followed by Family Remarks from 10-11 a.m., Rosary at 11 a.m., and Funeral Service at 11:30 a.m., all at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Interment immediately following at Palacios Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Frank Paredez, Jr., Gilbert Yanes III, Vincent Martinez, Nathaniel Ruiz, Justice Acosta and Anthony Garcia. Serving as ushers are Carlos Garcia, Jr. and Jacob Martinez.
A special "Thank you" to the doctors and Nurses of Hospice Home Care and Hospice of South Texas, Compassion Center, 1005 Mallette, Victoria, TX, for their expert care, thoughtfulness, understanding and compassion as they cared are for Gilbert for the past year and the few days as an In-Patient.
