Caleb Nathaniel Tier was born December 17, 1999, in Cape Coral, Florida, to Robert Tier and Betsy Hodoba. He was called home to be with both his Heavenly Father, and his earthly father, on October 24, 2023, in Gainesville, Florida. On the afternoon of October 21, 2023, Caleb was out doing one of the many things he loved, hanging out with friends in Sarasota, FL, out in the country on a camping trip. While riding an ATV, there was an accident and Caleb was life flighted to UF Health Shands Hospital, Gainesville, FL. The trauma team consisting of Neurosurgeons, Cardiologists, Nurses, and other various medical professionals did all they could for Caleb, but unfortunately the trauma to his brain and heart was just too much. Caleb held on for as long as he could, long enough for his family and friends to say their goodbyes, and in doing so he was able to save at least three other lives by donating his organs. We know he was met on the other side by his father Robert Tier, who preceded him in death 3 years prior, with the biggest bear hug, and knowing this bring us some comfort. But we still mourn the loss of our gentle giant, who was taken from us here on earth too soon at such a ripe young age of 23.
Caleb was full of life, love, and energy. Let’s face it, the boy could not sit still! From surfing the waves, to riding skateboards in the streets, to flying airplanes, jumping out of airplanes, his underwater sea adventures of cave exploration, swimming with sharks and goliath grouper; to riding jet ski’s and Boat Captain. Let’s not forget his other talents, drums, guitar, photography; anything this man put his mind to he could do it and master it in just a matter of days. He put so many of his mentors to shame (really he did, just ask some of his best friends and even his mother!)
Caleb’s Facebook quote says “Focused on living a life full of happiness, and making memories with the ones I love” and that he did. At just 23 years old, Caleb has been more adventurous, spontaneous, outgoing, fun loving, and lived a more fulfilled life than most can say who live to be a ripe old age. Caleb has touched so many lives and made so many memories, not just with family, not just with friends, but with anyone who ever met him. Caleb was just one of those people who never met a stranger. He could spark a conversation with anyone. He was a goofball and could make anyone laugh. Oh, and that smile, that gorgeous smile, you couldn’t help but to smile right back. His sister would tell you he was “The Best Big Brother Ever” and her role model, even though he would bully her or tease (sometimes a little too much), just to put a smile on her face. And his mother, she would say he’s the best son, a true momma’s boy through and through. His stubbornness and love for music and the sea, those came from his father, who was never more proud than to call him his son.
If you’re a Flagler native, you may have seen Caleb around town as he has held several jobs over his short time as Flagler Surf Camp Counselor, Busser and Server at Tortugas, Barista at Starbucks, Server at Hammock Wine and Cheese, Water Sport Operator at Hurricane Water Sports, and most recently he was a Jet ski and Boat Captain for Mystic Knot Boat Tours. Let’s not forget that Caleb also achieved and held his Open Water-Nitrox-Advanced Dive Certification and was working towards completion of his Master Diver Certification. Caleb also completed his boat Captain License Course and was on his way to taking his test to become fully licensed.
Caleb is survived by his sister Faith Tier, mother Betsy Hodoba, grandparents Michael and Beverly Tier, and aunts, uncles, cousins, and a multitude of friends who loved him as family with special mention to Franklin Delano, Leif Chapman, Michael Quiggly, Violetta and Brian Dinkova, and Amanda Massman.
A Celebration of Caleb’s Life will be held at Tortuga’s, 608 S Ocean Shore Blvd, Flagler Beach, FL. 32136 on Sunday November 5 at 5:00pm.
