

James Walker Hanger, 77, of Port Orange passed away December 1, 2015. Jim, a lifetime resident of this area was the son of the late Ralph and Carrie (Fromberger) Hanger. He was a graduate of Mainland High School class of 1956, Daytona State College class of 1973 and received his Bachelor’s degree from Rollins College. A member of VFW Post 1590, Jim honorably served in the U. S. Army. He was a police officer for the Daytona Beach Police Department from 1966-1969 and was a Deputy with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department for 28 years until his retirement in 2003. He suffered a brain injury in 2003 a few months after retiring and was well cared for by his loving wife at home for the past 12 years. Jim had a love of life which was enjoyed by all. Jim was a member of the Police Benevolent Association and a former Halifax Youth League coach. He also was on the semi-pro football team the D.B. Thunderbirds from 1961-1965 coached by the late Bud Asher. Jim enjoyed being a good provider for his family. He was always fun-loving and liked playing horseshoes and swimming. He always asked for a smile and loved life. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 36 years, Peggy; sons Jonathan J. Hanger, Cayce J.M. Hanger, and James Tyler Watts; daughter Kelly Marie Licht and 11 grandchildren. Beside his parents Jim was predeceased by his 3 brothers Ralph, Richard and Marvin. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday December 6, 2015 at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home 4815 S. Clyde Morris Blvd. Port Orange. Funeral Services will be held at the funeral home, Monday 11:30 a.m. followed by burial in Volusia Memorial Park, Ormond Beach.
