Jim was born on March 9, 1939 in the Bronx, New York and was raised in Manhattan until age 5 when he moved to Yonkers, New York. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and became an Electronics Technician, specializing in radar repair aboard the Navy’s first guided missile cruiser, USS BOSTON (CAG-1). After three years of faithful service, Petty Officer Third Class James Kenny was honorably discharged from the US Navy and began a career with the New York Telephone Company (later Verizon) where he worked for over 32 years. On July 1, 1978, he married Elvira (Elfi) Kenny. They raised two sons, James Kenny II (from a previous marriage) and Erik Kenny. After retiring from the phone company in 1993, Jim and his family moved to Port Orange, Florida where he lived for the rest of his life.
Jim’s love for his family, the Navy and a good party are only a few of the many qualities that all who knew him will long remember. He could always be heard speaking lovingly about his children and grandchildren or fondly and vividly remembering his years in the Navy as though they were just yesterday. For over twenty five years, Jim was an active member the German-American Club in Peekskill, New York, where he was the bar manager and could always be heard working on his German.
Jim is survived by his wife, Elfi and his sons, James and Erik, his sister Cathy, and numerous grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at the Volusia Memorial Funeral Home in Port Orange, Florida, on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at eleven o’clock a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jim’s memory to Presbyterian Children’s Hospital.
